Neglect or not?

My bd and i take turns looking after our 1yo. I work he looks after bub and then id finish work and hes off to work. I come home (if shes sleeping) ill clean up and do things around the house because when bub is awake, i cant get anything done. But there are days when Im too exhausted to clean ill lock myself & bub in the room and ill go to sleep. & yes i do make sure theres nothing dangerous that she can reach. Worst she can do is pull all the clothes on the floor and throw her toys around. Is that wrong for me to do that?

I’m impressed you can sleep with a wild one running around 😂 I mean if you’re 100% sure it’s completely baby proof and things are anchored to the wall and no little bits of the floor to try and eat I guess you do what you gotta do!! I would say it’s not fair for hours but maybe 10-15 min kip isn’t terrible. Personally I couldn’t, mainly cos baby wouldn’t let me 😂 and I don’t think my anxiety would either tbf. I wouldn’t call it neglect but I wouldn’t consider it good either

Why don’t you swap it around, sleep when she sleeps and clean when she’s awake. It’s definitely possible to get little bits done while they’re awake cos they’ll enjoy being involved.

Neglect

Avatar

Yes, please don't leave your child unattended. I get you are tired, we all are. Sleep when baby is asleep if you need sleep, and do what you can while they are awake.

Avatar

Yes this is neglectful, being a working mum myself I realise how tiring and exhausting it is, but you have to power through.
Get your 1 year old some toys and put them in the room you're cleaning in with your child, then move them round the house as you go. Don't leave baby to their own devices while you have a nap, it's dangerous and really unfair to your baby.

Power through, you can do this!

Avatar

I feel before people start stating ‘neglect’ that a little more context is given. What is your LO doing while the BD is minding them? Why is she awake so often when you’re minding her? Why is there so much cleaning to do when you come home from work? I don’t understand why more people aren’t asking this question? If both parents are working why is it all on the mum to sort everything out while also trying to rest after working?

Avatar

that wasn’t the question though? The question was ‘is it neglectful to go to sleep and lock my child in the room with me whilst I’m asleep’ so people are giving their opinion and answer to that question.. and OP used the term neglect herself, it’s not a word other commenters have started randomly throwing around.

Avatar

I understand that completely. It’s not ideal. But I as Mum’s shouldn’t we be asking for more details? The fact that the Mum is even posting this shows it’s caused concern for her. How many other things are possibly weighing in her to feel the need to express this? What’s the BD doing the whole time he minds the child? Does he also sleep? Like there’s so much more to it other than the exact question

Avatar

We all do what we need to do is sure there is times that almost every one has accidently fallen asleep around a baby but I try not to just wouldn't do it very often

Avatar

What I don't understand is the theme I see of men "not doing enough" or "women doing it all". It's like this immediate assumption that someone is to blame.

We both work full time too. None of us takes naps while the toddler is awake. The house is a tip most days despite the fact that we both pull our weight in and look after it. Unless we hire a cleaner, this will be the case for some time.

Let's not overthink this. House is messy, we do what we can and damn it, we don't sleep while babies are roaming around because it's dangerous. The biggest takeout of this post for me is the fact that someone is so freaking exhausted, and so concerned with the state of their house, that they think they can sleep while their baby is playing. I am glad she at least asked and hope she follows the advice.

I know so many kids who got hurt because their parents took their eyes off them for a split second. One minute they are safe and next they develop their new skill to climb or decide to play with the electric socket.

Avatar

I'd say yes it's wrong, anything can happen even if you think everything is safe. I just feel it's too risky.

Avatar

You sound exhausted, so we don't need to call names. I know you're doing your best. But I also think you know you need a better long-term plan. It's time to think about what changes you can reasonably make to your home and routines that will get you more rest and more help. Do it today. If something did happen (remember, babies find ways to surprise us all the time!) you'd never forgive yourself. 💔😢

Avatar

where is the name calling?

Avatar

Thank you for seeing another side of this. I feel the same. No one is saying it’s ok to sleep while the baby plays or has free rein over the room. However, in saying that, how many Mum’s actually sleep if they think their child is getting up to mischief lol. I feel this Mother needs our support instead of full blame/judgement x

Avatar

@N (I can’t find your name to reply) Why do you seem so intent on calling out this poor, exhausted mother. I understand it’s not ok to sleep while minding your child, but to feel so insistent to cause blame is a little odd to me

Avatar

It’s definitely unsafe. Depending on the task you could use a baby carrier to strap her to your front or back to get things done with your LO. If there are some tasks that need to be done urgently and don’t take a ton of time you could also put on a program like cocomelon depending on how you feel about screens. Also it’s totally ok to just not be able to get everything done! There were times, especially when my girl was younger that I just didn’t get to wash the dishes some nights or ordered food when I had planned to cook. The most important thing is to look after both your baby and yourself

Avatar

Also a playpen might be a good way to keep your kid confined and occupied while you get a few tasks doing

Avatar

sorry?
Where have I laid blame? Or said anything negative to/about OP?
My comment was actually offering a solution of switching the way round she does it.
And yes I’ve replied to some other comments but again, never anything negative.

My anxiety could never let me sleep whilst my baby is awake 💀

Resentment and placing blame on partner

Firstly, please don’t judge me - I’m aware all my thoughts aren’t rational and I do already feel badly about them

I’m finding myself becoming easily frustrated, annoyed, and placing a lot of blame on my partner for many things. Now I’d get it if he was rubbish but he’s not - he has the baby straight away when he gets home from work, he lets me get ready and shower before he goes to work, he pitches in with the chores and gives me any time I ask for off. He doesn’t go out loads either.

I do a lot of the mental labour - realising we need more of and purchasing clothes, milk, groceries, deciding dinner, cooking, cleaning, thinking about what baby needs, etc.

However I just find myself annoyed and blaming him for so many things I find difficult. I know this isn’t fair, but it’s almost like I’m angry that he’s finding it easy and I’m not. Angry if I’ve just got the baby to sleep and he doesn’t think and closes doors to loudly. Angry when he doesn’t dress baby warm enough, or when he puts him in a car seat with a coat on. When he forgets a blanket or doesn’t wash his hands and plays with him. When hes snoring and I’ve just got the baby to drift off.

We have had many conversations and he has tried to take loads off me but it never feels like enough for me to stop being annoyed with him.

Am I experiencing some sort of post partum mental health issues? I find myself upset and crying a lot. any advice would help.

Nursery lunches?

My daughter is nearly 10 months old and starting nursery next month. I want to send my daughter in with lunches so I know shes eating healthy meals but I'm honestly so lost as to what to put in her little bento lunch box that will keep till lunch time and doesnt need reheating. Ive been doing loads of baby led weaning at home, but I tend to make it fresh or pull stuff from the freezer I've previously made and defrost and reheat.
Could you show me some of the lunches you've been giving your baby? Or have you been been letting the nursery deal with the food?

Parenting 24/7 is harder than going to work full time?

I’m having a debate with my partner as he’s done nothing to help since. Our 14 month old was born, I’ve done it all alone all day and all night. He gets a break when he comes in from work all night I never get a break
He try’s to tell me it’s harder going to work full time 5 days a week than parenting ALONE 24/7?
What do you think

What would u do? What should i do

So to try to explain this in the best way possible I have a very small apartment.
I opened my back door which leads directly to the laundry room of the building. Lately, I started bringing my son in the laundry room with me because he bangs on the door and tries to get out.

Today I opened the door to get my stuff out of the dryer. I saw I guess my neighbor putting stuff in the washer. It’s a very tight space so I closed the door and was planning on going back after he leave instead of crowding up the space with the baby. Plus I was in shorts and had no bra on, it was an older man.

I latched my door with the dead lock as I usually do so that I do not get locked out and I just left it that way without thinking about it.

I turned my back walk maybe about 5-7steps. My apartment is barely 15 steps front to back.
Turn around. Realize my baby is GONE he’s only 16 months!

I start yelling for him. I approach the door and I hear my son laughing…
The man had opened my door to lure my son in the laundry room with him without me knowing!!!!!!!

They were playing 🤯

He was there for no more then 20-30 seconds if that. It happened so fast, he doesn’t speak good English he’s polish
My door usually slams loud when closed, so this was done quietly…..

When I discovered that the man was with my son, I was trying to simply take my kid back in the house, but he continued on playing and I was yelling at my son that he shouldn’t be wondering without me.

No, first off I know for a fact, my son did not open the door number one. It’s very heavy and number two. He doesn’t know how to open doors yet.

And I asked the man straight out did my son open the door and he said no I did.

My son could get the door to open maybe an inch, I know that. So he must have done that and the man just decided to open it and bring my son with him.

I’m so outraged. Annoyed, uncomfortable. I live alone just me and my son.

What do I do?

I don’t know if he is maybe a visitor, I see his car sometimes but usually it’s another person who looks like him with a different car. Maybe my neighbors dad is my best bet.

Anyway. What should I do? Should I bring this to management. Should I approach my neighbor and figure out exactly who that was?

Thanks ladies wish me luck

I live in a small 2 bedroom flat. How do I keep my home smelling nice?

Especially bedroom considering dirty laundry lives in there too. I do laundry once a week because I don’t use enough to do more frequent.
But I just want my room smelling nice and cosy.

The more natural the method the better ladies 😣
I open windows everyday. I don’t get enough sunlight for plants 😭

FTM

Hello,
FTM here. At what age do you stop applying cream on nappy area during nappy changes? My 2 year old boy isn’t toilet ready yet but uses both nappy pants/pull ups and regular diapers
