My little boy has just turned 3 and has been brilliant at going to the potty for a couple of months now but only with Nappy free time.
He'll tell us when he goes and does wee and poo but everytime we try with pants he just wees in them. He will often wee then say he needs one but he's already done it in his pants.
I felt like today he was even forcing himself to, as the 3rd wee was only a tiny bit. I'm honestly so stuck on how to get him to communicate the need when pants are on.

👋😉 Hi In my 4 decades of toddler potty training experience I've learned the transition phase between diapers/nappies to bare bum to wearing underwear can be a tricky step for most toddlers.
At first the feel of cotton underwear will almost always trigger potty accidents because they feel like a diaper.
Undees can feel snug & absorbent like the comfy diapers your little cutie is used to eliminating in and didn't have to think about it and could pee/poo freely at any time - its a safety net.
Maybe you can try commando! No underwear or diaper/pull-up underneath pants, shorts.
Heres a helpful video for you that explains this progression and will help answer any questions about the timing, steps & stages of transitioning from:
1. diaper/nappy
2. bare bum
3. commando
4. underwear
5. pants/clothes

I agree. My son had some accidents in training underwear, so after a month we switched to boxer brief and that seemed to eliminate accidents. Commando is a good idea.

great! How's your potty training coming along for your little cutie? 😉

we seem to still be doing okay! He’s pretty consistent with peeing. Poop is a little harder, but he’s pooped several times in the potty. We are getting ready to try some overnights.

😉👍 good job
Since bladder control isn't something we can train nor "teach" a sleeping child to hold in their pee while they're sleeping, this part kind'a just gradually progressively happens on its own over time. Its more biological at this stage.
Staying dry thru sleeping, naps & night time potty training usually comes on its own naturally and later in the potty training process.

Being completely accident free and staying dry during sleep usually comes later in the potty training journey.
