Hi, I'm mama to my 3 year old little boy who has been diagnosed with Autism. I am struggling so much to get him to eat. He lives off like 2 foods both being 'baby snacks'. It is so so hard. Ive tried everything. He won't eat off a spoon and struggles with swallowing solid foods.
Any advice/foods to try💙

Also, would live off milk if he could. It's such a worrying thing seeing how little he eats, yet weight so far remains perfect for his age😌

Could he have a posterior tongue tie? Has thus struggle with swallowing foods been life long or new?

He may have afrid? What does the paediatrician say?

I would be worried too, and I don't like how picky my son is, either. I also think about when my cousins daughter was younger. All she would eat was cheese, literally! She grew out of it, though. But it's great that your son is at a normal weight, I would hold on to that positive point. Also, I don't know if they have eating therapy where you live, but maybe you could look into that!

he had his tongue tie cut at 3 weeks old x

been told this lots, so worrying. Waiting to see pediatrician soon x

he has been referred to dietitians and so just waiting for those appointments. Some days are worse than others at the minute x

Okay, hang in there. I've seen soy and almond milks too with extra nutrients and such. Maybe he'll drink those.

thank you. I'll have a look around x

For the time being he may like meal replacement shakes? The vanilla ones are similar to milk and he’d get some nutrients ❤️ Sorry to hear you both are struggling!

Although it’s not ideal could you find similar baby snacks that are just slightly different and in stages keep making them slightly different?

he does have peadisure vanilla shakes already but I've found these have caused such constipation x

My daughter is nearly 3, we are 3 months food refusal and living on goats milk. It’s HARD and kills you when you try everything.
Are you uk based? We are waiting to see a dietician god knows how long the wait is, but I did join the AFRID Facebook group which has lots of advice although I’m not sure my daughter has that but I’m sceptical x

I have Arfid! And am an autistic adult! I started to actively work thru my issues when I was 14 & have made a lot of progress myself
but I also have lots of memories of my youngest brother getting his diagnosis and subsequently working with a food therapist to expand his safe foods! He went from Mac & cheese, pirates booty, string cheese &, a few other items: to learning he is allergic to gluten & now that he eats gluten free he can eat SO MANY MORE THINGS THAN THE FIRST 11 years of his life allowed for.

My point here, check for a gluten sensitivity / other food allergies if you haven’t already. Autistic kids tend to know their bodies better than their able to communicate what’s happening inside them 🫶🏼 wishing you guys all the best (I personally have contamination ocd that came from the reality of me being allergic to red meats, without knowing it for a long time (til I was 14) which lead to my arfid, it also wasn’t just cause I am autistic, I’ve noticed it’s very secondary to other issues)

I don't know if you have this in the US but here in the UK we have paedisure and it was a god send when my eldest two were diagnosed and would struggle to eat. If I have the same struggle with my newborn down the line, I'll be doing the same again. Helped both mine thrive while giving us some grace while figuring out what could and couldn't be done.

yes! Ours is pediasure! Ahahahaha that’s so funny to hear

I second the feeding therapy. My little one is 5 had something similar. For him it was. Texture and consistency thing. So packaged foods were safer. At least pediasure is an option. Mine was living off Dino nuggets and bread for what felt like a long time.

My boys the same his diet is very limited and we have to feed him still. He’s 2 and a half
