opinions on renting (UK)

My partner and I and our baby live with my parents because on only his salary (25k) we cannot afford to get a mortgage. We have now been here a year and it’s really really getting to us, especially my partner as it’s not his parents so is different for him than it is for me. We have had it drilled into us by everyone not to rent because we’ll get stuck, be living pay cheque to pay cheque, not be able to save anything, and all our current savings will quickly go down the drain paying off someone else’s mortgage. So now we feel very stuck. We are only 22, so the chances of my partner getting a high enough payed job to get a mortgage is rare and probably won’t be possible for a good few years and when i’m also working too. What are people’s opinions on renting? Is it really that bad, do people really get stuck and struggle? I am planning on getting a part time job soon for a couple days a week, so that’ll mean we can afford to rent. I just don’t know if we should stick it out longer and stay at my parents where we can save or just rent for our own sanity?!

I rent.
Yes, I live paycheck to paycheck however I've been putting x amount aside each month to go towards a mortgage eventually for my forever home.
I am 20 with two children living by myself. I don't work so currently just on universal credit as my youngest is 7 months old.
Is it what I wanted to do? No
Is it the 'safest' option to make sure my kids have a roof over their heads? Yes.
Things take time and I'm okay with that as long as my kids are happy. As my kids get older and we buy our own home they'll have a room each, decorated to their liking etc. I keep that vision in my head to keep me going.

You're more than happy to message me anyday x

I don’t think renting is a trap because we rented and we were fine but also we had a high combined income that allowed us to save aggressively on top of rent. I think you should focus on making career adjustments to increase your/your partners salary as much as possible within the next 1-2 years and then move IF you can wait. But I’d make sure your partner’s happy with that, and make it into your goal

25k is barely enough to survive these days imho

I need to look into this more. We did try this before and after 3 months of paper work and back and forth phone calls we got declined! I have heard mixed opinions on this and don’t know enough about it but I should look into it more and consider it again xx

I rented from when I left home until I was 27 and now I’ve just bought my first lovely 4 bed house which I’m so proud of. My advice would be earn as much money as you can, don’t just settle for his wage. You guys both need to make smart career decisions at this point to set yourselves up to be able to rent and then work towards buying when you can. I had my girl at 23 and went back to work full-time when my she was 8 months so I could continue working towards my career and earn enough to live comfortably. £25k isn’t enough to live on for a family nowadays.

We rent. We can afford to rent a lovely house but to get a mortgage on it is near impossible (even with a £150k deposit it would be nearly £5k a month in mortgage).

We’ve always rented and it’s been lovely, we get no maintenance costs and it’s never stopped us decorating and making it a home.

Nursery funding

My child turned 9 months last week. I applied for government funded hours nearly 2 months ago and so well within the required timeframe for the April term, however upon receiving my first invoice without the funding applied and having questioned this, I have now been informed that the stretched funding doesn’t start until 4th May.

Has anyone else been told it won’t start until May?

The government site states it should start from April 1st, and so I intentionally set my nursery start and return to work as the start of April for that reason, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to afford the nursery on my sole income without the funding

NHS job

Anyone work for the NHS and does 12 hour shifts? How do you work around childcare and your partners job?

Toddlers

How often are your toddlers asking for food? My oldest who is 3 just finished a whole plate of food and not even 10 minutes later he’s requesting more food. I know he’s going through a growth spurt, but how do you respond to this.

He has no respect for anything to do with me.

Husband and I decided to separate 3 days ago. I've been sleeping on the floor in the kids room, and we both have to stay in the same apartment for a while. He wont stop pushing little things and I am reaching my limit. Photos in comments

Is this normal?

Is it just my husband that does this? He is able to work from home via his computer and in the mornings and evenings he is on there doing his job. When he is done for the day he tends to stay in the room and either play video games or watch something. He will occasionally come out and play with the girls for a few minutes and that’s it but when I really need him he says he is busy. My daughters are both 1 year old now and I am just wondering how much involvement should he have with them now?
Idk if this is the norm or not…..

Starting BLW

Yesterday our pediatrician said we could start purées or baby lead feeding. My baby is exclusively breast-fed. She’s already tried some foods, but now we can start with one to two meals a day. This is what my doctor recommends, any ideas for what to make with this??
