We are both from an ethnic background where spanking / hitting a child was normalised
I grew up being spanked when naughty but I don’t believe it as a useful tool at all in disciplining a child and I don’t want to parent this way
Hubby on the other hand thinks it’s ok and says he was raised that way and it has given him “thick skin” and taught him discipline
I’m at an impasse because I just can’t imagine a hand being laid on our son that way but I don’t want to leave the marriage either
What should I do?

Would have to leave if his opinion didn't change

Spanking is really bad .. don’t support it .

Maybe see if he’ll have a read of the research on it https://www.winchester.ac.uk/news-and-events/press-centre/media-articles/smacking-children-what-the-research-says.php#:~:text=Children%20are%20more%20likely%20to,the%20child%20and%20their%20peers.

Ask him to read more about the harm of spanking 😡 discipline... Consequences...

I'm willing to bet your husband has issues handling or expressing his emotions because of all the spanking he got. All it does is teach kids to shut in their emotions and to physically lash out instead. He's basically teaching your son to hit people if he is upset or angry.

Ideally these things would be ironed out before you have kids 🫠
But as you're here I think you need to make it clear how important this is to you. For me it'd be a complete dealbreaker and I would rather break up my family than have my husband hit our kids.

Not sure where you're based, but in Scotland it is actually illegal https://www.mygov.scot/smacking-children

It’s not given him a “thick skin” it’s given him a thick head and psychological damage that’s lead to him wanting to hit his child/ baby.

is it just in Scotland? 😮

it’s illegal in wales too, but it’s still legal as long as it’s considered “reasonable punishment” in England, shockingly!

sadly, I am not shocked 😆😭😭😭

If anyone hit my child, regardless of their relationship they would be out of our lives so fast.

Light spank on the bum . I see no problem with but anything more extreme is abuse

you need to sit down and discuss how you are going to discipline your child together so you are both on the same page and consistent in your approach!
spanking/smacking is never acceptable! tell your partner if an adult behaved in a way he didn’t like/want he wouldn’t be allowed to hit them as it’s assault it’s the same for a child!

I always think spanking is used by parents who don’t know how to discipline their children verbally. And I was spanked growing it! It only taught me to be scared of my parents. The best thing is to verbalise why they shouldn’t do the things they’re being told off for. Time outs work just as good

Spanking is lazy parenting tbh. Even with all the other stuff that's bad about it. They usually just cba to try other methods and want the quickest option

This should have been a thing spoken about before you married imo.
But nothing is wrong with spanking as long as it isn't just spanking. Same thing with other punishments. I told my husband I never wanted to be screaming at my child. However, we both agreed that physical punishment had to be at a minimum. Yes, spanking can be seen as an extreme, but it's better than letting your child become reckless. You don't have to be the spanker. If your husband wants to be the firm hand when it comes to your children when they are older, then so be it. Spanking a baby makes no sense.

First of all- you don’t need to leave your marriage just yet. Smacking is different from spanking.
IMHO, and when I was raised we we’re spanked only in a very specific circumstance, and in a specific way. If we ever ran into a dangerous situation and needed to be disciplined swiftly and strongly (for example, running into the street) my dad would give us one strong swat on the butt (over the clothes). It was never a psychological, waiting game of terror or delayed reaction to something that could be calmly figured out. It was never way for my dad to release his anger.
My husband‘s father was spanked with a paddleboard until bruises showed and that’s absolutely not OK. But I think there’s a conversation to be had about when it’s appropriate under what circumstances and what the assumed outcome would be. Also, I don’t know how old your son is, but it doesn’t sound like he’s old enough to have gotten into a dangerous situation where you could find out how this would affect you or how

Absolutely NOT it's illegal here in the UK you can go to prison so I definitely don't agree most mums on here would agree that spanking isn't normal anymore ,it's a new generation entirely this methods should change! Spanking is abuse it's not normal in my opinion,it was banned here in 2005 ,even tho I was spanked when I was young and it didn't solve anything,I was staying with my aunt when I was younger and watched her spank her kids and said if this was you I'd do this to you ....never have I felt such horror! It's inflicting pain for what??? Teach them a lesson really??? No no that would make me extremely upset ,I don't think I'd carry on a relationship with someone like that let alone ,let my kids be with someone like that ..

I’ve made it clear that me and my ex will not be spanking our daughter and anyone who does will not see her for a period of time until I get an apology or I’ve calmed down cause I will lose my absolute shit if anyone spanks my daughter.
