My oldest really hasn’t taken to his new sibling being around 🙈 I want my chill happy boy back!!!
He is acting out, ignoring me, waking up in the night, throwing himself around and tantruming whenever his little brother cries, so that’s fun 😣 getting frustrated with his toys more easily, it’s like his regressed! He has spent a lot of time in ‘time out’ this past week but I’m I’m not even sure if that’s the right thing to be doing - but at the same time we can’t carry on like this otherwise I’m heading towards the loony bin 🥴😩

I’m yet to experience this as my baby isn’t quite here yet but I dread this happening. I personally wouldn’t be doing time out but that’s just me, I feel like that could potentially make it worse if it’s only increasing since baby has come, he may have more hate towards the baby as he sees it as the baby’s fault. I’ve had a lot of suggestions about making sure you put the toddler first before the baby as the baby won’t remember whereas it can impact your toddler more, do more activities for your toddler so he’s not feeling left out (you may already be doing this I’m just saying what I’ve been advised to do), letting them hear you say things like oh “baby” I’ll be with you in a minute I just need to do xyz with your big brother as then it can help make them feel a little more important. At the end of the day it’s a huge adjustment for them so a lot of it is probably just him having to get used to it

It is sooo tough, and then feeling guilty for not being able to give the older sibling the attention they want/need! My eldest is only a year & a half so it isn’t too bad, but I’ve literally just had to leave the room because I was feeding the newborn and he kept coming over to hit her or pull my hair while dad was making dinner. Agree with the point above on involving them as much as possible - distracting him by asking him to go get me a nappy or something has worked reasonably well. It will get better with time ❤️
I’ve sat on the floor with my toddler and played when baby is asleep, made sure he has everything when he wants it, I’ve got dad to take him out for one and one time at the park etc. when he does wake in the night I go into him and tuck him back in, give him some love. The problem is my toddler is almost 3 and isn’t verbal with us yet (we’re still in question as to whether he is just speech delayed or more is going on). So it makes it that bit harder and I think he gets more frustrated because of this. So even if I was to say go get me a nappy etc. he won’t understand unfortunately 🥲 I understand it’s a big change and it won’t last forever but I guess I’m just venting as to how hard it has been, especially when you see these siblings that just bond with their siblings straight away and it’s all perfect x

Ah I’m sorry that does sound extra hard but it sounds like you’re doing as much as you can. Hopefully it is something he will adjust to soon

My newborn is 3 weeks old and it gets better. My toddler has always been a bit sassy but is such a sweet girl and when we brought her sister home her behaviour completely changed and it was so upsetting to see. She didn’t know how to act and was shouting, crying, waking through the night and just constantly asking for a cuddle. Initially we were trying to involve her as much as possible but keeping her at arms length and for us, letting her get closer and have a hold of the baby when she asks etc has really helped. She’s gone back to her normal self, I wouldn’t think that “time outs” is going to help as it’s a massive change for them and pushing them out for a time out might just add to the problem. How old is your newborn? Xx
