I had a call from my boys nursery around 11:30am saying that he tripped and fell on a chair and now his eye is swollen bruised and bleeding (bingo)! I got the sense they wanted me to collect him but they didn’t say, I just said I will ring his doctors because I’m not sure what needs doing they told me to take him straight to the hospital. I called his nursery and went to collect him, when I was there around 12 he was so upset still and they said it happened at 11 and was still bleeding, the chair in question was purposely positioned in a gangway I’m still not sure why, instantly they started trying to seemingly point the finger saying he’s overtired (dropped his nap 3 weeks ago) and he was irritated all morning etc I did brush it off as I was trying to console him. The manager showed the chair to me and said it is a rounded edge not pointed and I just said it’s a good job would have had his eye out if it was. I then went to go and they were handing out grapes so of course he wanted them and I said we have to go can we take them? I was told no but because he hadn’t had any I stayed for the extra 2 mins and he wanted more and I said it’s fine we have to go back for nappies and my car is stocked with snacks then when getting his shoes on and coat they came out with banana in a bowl and said I could take it? Anyway, he’s fine couldn’t get stitches because of where it is and his age so got a bandage plaster thing and have to keep an eye on him, distraught as I was asked about social services?! But I gave the nurses the accident letter to say it was at nursery. His dad wants to arrange a meeting with his nursery just to go over whats going to be put in place etc. but i dont know tbh i didnt like the other comments for sure and seemingly delaying me leaving but would you say something?

I personally would have lots of questions and definitely escalate it. It was at 11am, no way near nap time. (My son’s nursery has nap time at 1pm). So stuff about him being overtired is rubbish. how did he fall? Was the chair in an awkward position? Did he get pushed? Was another child involved in anyway? Why were you not called immediately and they waited for 30 minutes? What did they do to try and stop the bleeding? Do they have cctv camera to see what happened? This needs to be properly investigated. I would be so angry if this happened at my son’s nursery.

Most importantly, I hope your little boy is okay and he gets better soon.
Thank you! He’s fine I think the bandage thing is irritating him but going to call the doctors this morning for them to clean it up and replace it and just make sure he’s okay still. Yeah the overtired comment did make my blood boil, we’ve decided to drop his nap because he gets more sleep in the night then with a nap so he has 12 hours in total at night without a nap but was having around 10 in total with a nap so it’s common sense getting like 12 hours extra sleep a week! But they’ve been moaning about it ever since we asked them. Apparently he tripped over some foam blocks and fell on the chair, I’m assuming they called them for something to eat because that’s where the tables and chairs are just this one chair was in the walk way. His ear I didn’t even realise about till we got to the hospital so I called and asked about that and she said they didn’t realise and will check the cctv.
Yeah I’ll give them an email today just to arrange a meeting tomorrow! Thank you 🙏🏻

Poor baby 😢
100% escalate it.
You can request CCTV footage but if there's other children in it, then you may not get it due to child protection.
They shouldn't have left it an hour with it still bleeding before calling you.
How much blood was there? Did they give you anything or show you anything which could have been used to indicate blood loss?
Who/what first aid was done? Were they actually first aid trained? How long after the incident did they call?
Accidents can and do happen but blood loss is usually something medical professionals are interested in. How soon after did you get him seen?
In regards to social, it happened in the nursery not at home. Keep the proof safe and try and keep proof of any follow up appointments. I doubt anything will come of it but just make sure you're covered.
Social and HV do have access to some records done through the hospital. I took my youngest A&E at 4 days (eye infection) and the HV bought up the fact she'd already been in A&E and asked why I took her

It doesn't necessarily mean you need to worry.
Hope he recovers soon 💜 xx
So we requested a meeting and met with them today, they have advised that they did a risk assessment after we left and the manager had to tell the staff to be hyper vigilant if a child puts a chair in a walk way move it back, if they are balancing look around to do an on the spot risk assessment, they also said that she escalated it to her manager who will then have to escalate it to her manager at head office because he ended up in hospital.
She said she’s also not happy about the irrelevant comments about him being overtired as the incident took place in the morning and will advise the staff that it’s inappropriate.
Well I got him at 12 so an hour after it happened which they were constantly wiping it and making him upset. I got to hospital at 12:30 and we were out by 2 which is pretty good tbh.
The woman I spoke to was the health and safety and DSL and she was who I spoke to when I picked him up.
I asked why the ambulance wasn’t called and she said because one of the staff.
Would have to leave and that would mean they’d have to wait for parents to collect their children and they thought he would get the care he needed quicker with me collecting which does make sense!
We do feel a lot more happier since the meeting to be honest! So I’m glad we decided to go with it xx

Accidents happen, at home and at nursery and this looks like a bad one! Poor little mite! I see he’s home and recovering. I hope they are okay!
You can ask for a meeting, it may have outcomes. Increase in awareness, keep walk ways clear
Etc…
But my question would be do you feel safe sending them back? Do you think it was a genuine accident. I do from the information I’ve seen and experienced a lot worse working in a primary school!
If it was the other way round the accident happened at home if the nursery wasn’t happy, the answer is would possibly ring social care if your answer doesn’t match up, wether they like you and have a great relationship..
It’s a hard one. Genuine accident and you can still have a meeting about it, but it will raise awareness I would go from there personally if your partner needs it. But maybe if you feel the same way, a positive voice needs to counteract the negative one
Yeah well that’s what I said at the meeting today, I didn’t go into nursery saying what have YOU done to my son, so I don’t appreciate the comment of it’s because he’s overtired hinting that because we have made the decision to drop his nap it’s caused this incident. And she totally agreed and apologised. Tbh they showed us a redacted version of the cctv as they have had to send this off to her manager and he was balancing on a foam brick block and as he’s gone to get off it’s like when you miss a step on the stairs it’s thrown him a little and then he fell and hit his head on the chair. It was awful and I hated watching it as she said it was an accident but it could have been prevented by them taking a little more care about the surroundings.
We do feel okay sending him back there especially how they’ve addressed the meeting today and I feel like by us requesting a meeting it does show that we care.
And I know right when he bumped his head on our table we asked the hospital to…
Give us notes and I went in a couple days later when it settled armed and ready for any comments 🤣 it’s horrible that we have to be that way but I’m glad in a way too!!
I suppose as well they’ve been so upfront with the video and saying they’ve done a risk assessment and explaining why they felt it was better and quicker if I came to collect him and take him to hospital rather than call an ambulance xx
