16-Month Speech

Hi everyone, we recently had a visit with a health visitor and my son scored quite low in the speech portion. I’m not necessarily worried yet because he babbles and talks a lot but just doesn’t say many real words. He says “moo”, “quack quack” “woof woof” and “hi or hiya” along with “dada”. He has only put two words together once to say “hi dada”. He understands what animals make those sounds when we prompt him.

I don’t really know how his speech compares to other children his age. According to the HV questionnaire, he should say 4-8 words or more, and be able to put two words together. I know his speech will develop in his own time, and I’m prioritising supporting him with this. He goes to nursery 3 half days per week and I am thinking of asking his teachers if from what they’ve observed his speech is comparable to others his age.

Would anyone be able to provide some insight on their little ones speech?

My lo is nowhere near what your lo can say. I think your lo is doing great! My lo can say mum, dada or daddy and hiya and that’s it. He points and makes grunting sounds to communicate what he wants and babbles a lot but that’s about it and I’m happy with where he’s at ☺️

My eldest didn’t really talk as in more than 2 words together until just before 2.5yrs old. But when he did start to talk it was full on sentences and he didn’t stop talking 🤣 my eldest failed his 2yr old speech assessment but our HV team prefer to wait until 2.5yrs old before making a speech referral. When they checked back with us they were happy his speech had caught up xx

My little one does say a lot of words tbf but he struggles saying longer words and can only repeat the end of the word and can only say a few words together like more please or good job, I think they’re the only words he says that are not a single word x

Sounds like your little one is doing amazing, they all really come on in their own time! xx

Mine can say Mama, Dada, Peppa, Ivy, Gugu (what she calls Gus the cat), ball, various animal noises and can copy words with the right number of syllables but not necessarily the right sound. She definitely doesn’t put two words together yet

It's wild how different health visitors/expectations are in different areas. At my LBs 15 month check, my health visitor said she was only looking for 2 clear and meaningful words.

We're in a yes phase at the moment, so that's the word we get most, but I'd say he has around 8-10 words that he says regularly and understands.

Sounds like your little one is doing amazing, and if nursery were concerned, I'm sure they'd have mentioned something by now.

My lg can say up to 20 words now and does sign language. She watches miss rachel so that has definitely helped 😊

My son does not say any word. Not even dada and mama. And to be honest I am not worried at all as I can see he understands everything I say, so I know he will eventually start speaking one day!

Can someone pls help i keep making this post and nobody is responding

My boyfriend booked a trip for us to go to mexico for a week as my push present. I have severe anxiety leaving my 7 month old with my mom. I know she will be in good hands but she’s exclusively breast fed for the most part but accepts bottles just fine. i have all my pumping parts packed and will pump when baby normally eats but i don’t want baby to forget me or have latch issues when i return!! any mommas ever experience this?

Postpartum

I’m only 3 days postpartum (FTM) and already have extremely bad anxiety. I’m crying every night, as I think of another night of no sleep. My baby will not settle in his cot, he cries every moment we put him down unless in his chair rocker. So me and my partner are having to alternate after 3/4 hours of being awake with him downstairs. I’m trying everything to get him to settle. It’s a load of overwhelming stress. I’m 23, I was desperate for a baby and now I have one and feel completely useless. I miss it just being me and my partner.

When does it get better?

I was crying on the phone with the perinatal mental health team today and the lovely lady, bless her, kept assuring me that it gets better. I kept telling her I hope so because people have been saying that since having my LO and it just feels like it keeps getting worse. She assured me it gets better....

Night time routine

Heya, my 3 week old daughter is currently exclusively breastfed and I’m not pumping. Can anyone recommend the best way to share the load with my partner? At the moment I’m doing all the feeds/burbs/settling and my partner is sleeping through which obviously isn’t sustainable, I’m trying to work out the best way to get him involved. Any advice very much appreciated!
