We got self closing ones and I regret it we can't leave them open without propping something in the way otherwise they bang shut and wake him up especially when we have people stay who aren't used to them

We have 2 different gates. The more traditional style of gate: https://amzn.eu/d/8bZdYqH
We also have a retractable 1 at the top of the stairs. It's a tad noisy when retracting but saves tripping on the bar: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BVZ8CHS6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I both love and hate both. My mum is looking at getting the retractable 1 for hers as my little girl loves the stairs. I will say that for the stairs double check your measurements. My mum brought us the traditional style and its pushing it a bit at side push pieces (they're almost fully extended and the extended is at an angle so doesn't fit)

We tried a few but ended up with the BabyDan perfect close. It's the only one that feels solid and secure. It's easy to open and closes with just a push, but it stays open when you leave it open too. We did have a low step one for the top of the stairs but it was fiddly to close and didn't feel very secure. This is the one we now have at the top and bottom...

good tip thank you! Exactly why I posted before buying! I have a dog so self closing wouldn’t work

We use baby dan ones. They have no bars to trip on. Its not recommended to put retractable ones at the top of stairs but at the bottom or in a doorway is fine x

We got these ones, and love them

good safety point!
I love these! Much easier on the eye! But have a dog so need more of a gate style so she can come and go x

We have a babydan guard me auto foldable at top and bottom. No bar at bottom to trip but needs to be screwed in. I saw a video saying don’t get a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs because it could be dangerous if it gets pushed against. Okay for other areas though
