When you make a bottle fresh and sit it out to cool with the lid on but baby falls back asleep. How long can you keep it out and use it when he next wakes up? Read conflicting information like between 1-2 hours?

Without baby’s mouth touching it, 2 hours. If baby’s mouth has touched it, 1 hour. You cannot put a bottle in the fridge after a baby’s mouth has touched it.

Hospital told me 4-6 hours?! Omg this was never mentioned to me 😟

I think this is for fresh milk! Once it's heated up, it is only good for an hour- 2 hours !

that’s what I thought but I see them saying baby’s mouth touching bottle to discard even if it’s not heated 😳

For whatever it's worth I use the same bottle all day and haven't had a problem...I have never heard of the "once a mouth touches it" thing

do you eat & drink from dirty dishes all day too?

Unfortunately bacteria will grow and you can make your baby sick doing this. It would be like leaving a glass of milk on your counter for hours and then drinking it yourself.

that was probably harsh, but just because you haven’t had a problem ‘yet’ doesn’t mean you won’t. You are exposing your baby to potentially nasty bacteria. I hope no one else follows your ‘advice’ because babies could become really ill. It’s unnecessary - bottles do not take that long to wash and sterilise. It’s recommended for a reason, not to just give us more work to do. I get it being a FTM can be really difficult and you choose what advice you follow but guidelines are there for a reason.

that’s exactly the advice. your baby’s health comes first, don’t take any risks…

that is a very odd advice to give… as Holly mentioned it’s not because nothing happened that it’d the right thing to do… please refrain from giving advices like this….

I won’t thank you, I want to do the right thing and make sure he’s safe 🥰

Ew, you don’t even wash your babies bottle all day and also give them milk that has potentially been sat out all day? Do you eat off dirty plates and keep your milk in the cupboard as well?

milk is antibacterial! It attacks any bacteria that isn't good. That's part of why it's so good for babies even if they only have a couple drops. So if I had to throw it away anytime it hit my baby's mouth I'd be out of milk completely.
His mouth certainly can't be dirtier than whatever is floating around in the air 😂🤷♀️

yeah I can usually get her to finish in 1-2 hours but when we go out sometimes, I pour a double serving in the same bottle & keep it in the insulated pocket in my diaper bag & use it within 4 hours

she was referring to breast milk

Ah ok.. Breast milk is indeed amazing, but I think the advice is to discard it after 2-3h once baby starts drinking from it, but I’m not totally sure, something to check on NHS I guess.. I used to breastfeed (never expressed back then) and now I give formula only, so not fully sure..

breast milk straight from the boob is antibacterial! Cows milk does not fight bacteria bad for humans. And even if it did, the dehydration process would strip it of those properties
It's actually really cool to see it at work under a microscope! It immediately starts attacking bacteria!

If it’s formula, it has to be used within an hour. Breast milk can be 2 hours
