Hi! Looking for some tips/guidance. We’re trying to potty train our 2.5 year old. We tried once already two weeks ago, she did have a few pees in the potty but then suddenly had an aversion to it. No poop in the potty, she had a few in her underwear. We were trying the reward system with some smarties and asking if she had to pee every once in a while. I was only 2 weeks postpartum with our second child at that time and was feeling overwhelmed, and since we felt we were getting anywhere after 3 days we went back to diapers (I know they say not to, but my mental health needed it). Now it’s two weeks later and I’m feeling better, we want to try it again. So far yesterday and today she’s just been peeing in her undies, we can tell it bothers her but when we bring up the potty she gets upset and doesn’t want to sit on it. Has anyone else experienced this? We’re trying to just back off mentioning the potty now in hopes that she just didn’t like the pressure and will initiate on her own but so far she’d prefer peeing in her undies so we’re not sure how to approach now!

I would wait a little longer than the 2 weeks. We tried at 2.5 and had a similar experience trying to do it with a newborn.
Our second go round at 34 months has been way more successful.
Things that help:
Setting a timer and letting them turn it off
Making a going to the potty song that is special (ours is "come on Zachy, let's go potty etc)
There is a new Ms Rachel episode about potty training, it's really nice! Great for kiddo to watch and gives parents some tips.
We read lots of books ahead of time and let him take toys to go on the potty to make it more of a fun experience
Model behavior. Talk about you going to the potty, let her go with you. Let her flush even. That might help make it less scary.
Oh, one that's been helpful for us is having a little potty that we just move around the house so it's easy to get to. We take it out in the yard with us too. This helps us with minimizing transitions. He can go on the potty there and not have to go all the way to the bathroom

It’s easier to wait until she’s ready & not just you. That’s understandably frustrating to hear, but trust. I have 3 girls who all trained on their own terms in a single day with maybe an accident or 2 and that was it. My first was 2 & 5 months, my second was 2 & 8 months, my third was 3 & 4 months. Potty training shouldn’t be stressful for either of you!

We used the Oh crap! Potty training method. I think that book was extremely helpful.
My daughter started a week after she turned two. We keep books in rotation next to our toilets and read everytime shes on the potty, a lot of them were about going to the potty.
We also used the reward system but we used stamps instead. She would get a stamp on her hand or foot when she would go potty. We also listened to a lot of potty songs on Spotify and sing them constantly along with reading potty books. You wouldn’t believe how many potty songs are out there.

My son also hated the potty and refused to use it. We bought one of those ladder seats so he could use the proper toilet and it worked. Within days he was pretty much dry apart from the odd accident when he was playing etc

Update: after this post (and the few accidents), she had her nighttime diaper on with PJ’s and was having a snack before bed when she asked to use the potty. She actually held it until we got her onesie and diaper off and walked her to the potty, where she had a huge pee!! It gave me hope that she actually knew she had the feeling and held it until it was time. Then yesterday the rest of the day she had 4 self initiated pees in the potty (and one accident outside while playing with water). This morning I dressed her and put undies on- I asked her if she needed to potty and she said no but once I went on the other side of the room to get stuff done, I saw her trying to push her pants down by the potty. I asked if she needed help and she said yes, I pushed them down and she sat and had a pee!!! So heading in the right direction now, I think we just needed to back off a bit and let her do it on her own (she’s a very independent toddler who wants to do it all herself).
