Pediatrician said to limit 95th percentile baby's food or he's at risk for childhood obesity

Today at our baby's 2 month visit the pediatrician mentioned he is in the 95th percentile for weight and offered some suggestions on how to space out meals and limit food intake. He's been a big baby from the start (8lb 8oz born at 39w1d) and is in the 76th percentile for height... Is it really realistic to try and limit food for a 2 month old? We've just been feeding him whenever he wants it and however much he wants to eat. Is childhood obesity really a concern for a chunky baby?

Is this baby breastfed?! My baby is also in the 90th+ percentile but I was told you can’t overfeed a breastfed baby and give them all they want!

Avatar

I’m curious too! It makes no sense to me either because we use a bottle too with breastmilk and we have used formula too and we were told to just feed her as much as she wants! My pediatrician is more of a homeopathic/natural type medicine practice so I wonder if that’s just a different perspective.

Avatar

I’d find that odd too!! My husband and I were pretty worried about how much she was eating ( 6 ounces at 4-6 weeks) every 2-3 hours if we did bottle and they were very reassuring like this is great she’s healthy and strong and gaining weight and that’s what you want. Something doesn’t sound right to me!

You can’t overfeed a baby. Every baby is different. If he’s content, not projectile vomiting and spitting a lot then you aren’t over feeding him. I would say change your pediatrician because she doesn’t make any sense

Avatar

Unless he’s DRASTICALLY jumping up percentiles I wouldn’t be concerned. If your baby started in a high percentile and has stayed around his own growth curve it’s fine. Babies are rapidly growing at 2 months and it’s not like they can do much physically which adds to the weight. His weight will stabilize once he’s actually able to move around.

Avatar

Honestly I wouldn’t worry because once they get moving around they kinda plateau and everything evens out. I wouldn’t worry until they are like 3-4

Avatar

exactly! my sons pedi mentioned his weight because he dropped percentiles at one of his last appointments but dude was climbing and crawling all over the place as opposed to being a little potato. now he’s back to jumping up percentiles again because he’s a HAM and loves grown people food. I really don’t stress over growth percentiles anymore because of it.

Avatar

honestly same because like my older is 90th percentile for everything but is in the 2 year old stage of surviving on snacks and she’s always up and going so has basically been sitting around 30lbs since 18-20 months and is about 26 months now

Wait wait WAIT.... a 2 month old baby?? What kind of nonsense? Get a different pediatrician and a second opinion. This one clearly has a bias towards obese children and is overcompensating. Your baby is 2 fucking months old. There aren't even enough data points to make a determination as to whether they are "overweight" or not. You figure that out later, as in towards 2-3 years of age. What kind of fuckery. Do not limit that child's food.

Also, I was a bottle feeder and have some educational background in infant nutrition. For anyone who is curious:

It's true that it is easier to overfeed a bottle fed baby, but this is down to the parents. Babies are incredibly good self-regulators and will stop when they are full. Parents overfeed when they 1) try to encourage baby to "finish the bottle" and not waste formula (because they can see the amount being wasted, it's not like breast milk where you don't have to estimate the amount needed), and 2) by trying to adhere to a feeding schedule and assuming baby needs food when they aren't showing hunger cues, again because they get overly concerned with amounts. If you always feed on demand, stop when baby is cueing to stop, and put any "wasted" formula out of your mind, you are highly unlikely to overfeed a formula-fed baby.

I would get another ped even if just for a second opinion

I would switch pediatricians.

I have a 99% baby in height and weight. She was born 11lbs/12oz and she just turned 2 months. Our pediatrician has never once mentioned anything about changing her eating habits.

Avatar

Get a new pediatrician. Absolutely harmful information at that young of an age

Avatar

How much does he weigh at 2 months? My baby turned 2 months today and he will have his next appointment on Thursday he weighed 9 lbs 14.5 oz at birth and I wonder how much he’ll weigh now he’s a pretty big boy

Avatar

I’m agree

Avatar

My baby is big also. At 6.5 months he’s 23 pounds, and in 12 month size clothing. His pedi wasn’t worried at his 6 month check up about him being big though. I’ve never heard of limiting food for a baby that young.

Is this clever or cruel?

My husband and i were talking and with social media and the internet in general being a terrifying dumpster fire, we are trying to figure out the best way to keep our son safe while still teaching him how to safely be online and moderation.

We landed on the idea of giving him the 90's kid treatment. A computer in the living room for us to keep an eye on what hes doing online, and once we feel hes mature enough to hang with friends without adult supervision he gets a flip phone. When we feel he is responsible enough and he earns and saves up the money for the physical phone, case, and screen cover, then we will be happy to take him to get a smart phone.

I thought this was air tight, but now my brother says its cruel to give a kid a flip phone, and besides he can just use his friends phones at school.

My husband and i remember a time before the internet, and we remember having complete access to something no one understood yet. We saw unspeakable things and are always battling with the urge to put the phone and social media down. I dont want that for my son, especially with his brain so vulnerable still.

Partner no longer wants baby #2

Before our son was born we originally both wanted minimum 2 kids but we were hoping for 3-4. My partner found the birth traumatic to watch and also struggled a lot with the newborn/baby stage. He no longer wants to have any more children and it’s completely breaking my heart. I need another baby. We’ve spoken about it a lot and the options. He said he wasn’t COMPLETELY closed off to it so I asked him to try and work through his feelings and reconsider his decision. He eventually said he definitely doesn’t want another. I know that I will always want one and my feelings will never change. Do we have to break up or does anyone know anything else I can do to help change his mind? Has anyone else’s partner said this and then changed their mind? I don’t want to break up because I adore him and our life together and I’d hate to split up our family for “selfish” reasons and make my son miss out on having both of us together but I just don’t know what to do

Nursery funding

My child turned 9 months last week. I applied for government funded hours nearly 2 months ago and so well within the required timeframe for the April term, however upon receiving my first invoice without the funding applied and having questioned this, I have now been informed that the stretched funding doesn’t start until 4th May.

Has anyone else been told it won’t start until May?

The government site states it should start from April 1st, and so I intentionally set my nursery start and return to work as the start of April for that reason, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to afford the nursery on my sole income without the funding

Jealous of my husband

I’m so jealous of him and it’s making me resentful. We have a ten week old and I’m jealous that he is at work all day. I’m jealous he can leave for lunch and actually eat an uninterrupted lunch. Take a phone call uninterrupted. Chat with a friend he runs in to uninterrupted. Even go to the bathroom when he wants uninterrupted. He comes home from work when he wants. He’s not on a set schedule. Some days are late some are early. It depends on when he’s done. I’m jealous he can come home at 10pm and shower, eat and go right to bed uninterrupted because I already have the baby asleep. He doesn’t have to worry about anything house wise or baby wise because I’ve done it all. Meanwhile I’m covered in puke and crap and smell like rotten milk. When he is home he is VERY active and helpful. So it’s not that. I’m just jealous his world hasn’t changed and mine has I guess. This isn’t something he’s doing wrong so I’m not sure how to get past this. I wish I could keep him home all day because that’s how helpful he is, but I understand he obv needs to work.

Toddlers

How often are your toddlers asking for food? My oldest who is 3 just finished a whole plate of food and not even 10 minutes later he’s requesting more food. I know he’s going through a growth spurt, but how do you respond to this.
