Hey mamas,
I’m a single mom to a 5 year old little girl. Me and my daughter has been staying in a Airbnb for going on 2 years next year where I work for the Airbnb host. The job is a basic cleaning job where she’s SUPPOSED to pay me for the hours I work but instead she is withholding my check because I am currently 6 weeks behind in rent.
I have had constant conversations with her where I feel controlled and suffocated because she’s controlling my check. Now I know that if I was to file a wage claim I would have to leave probably immediately because she would probably have to retaliate. Plus, she hasn’t been reporting my hours. This whole set up just isn’t sitting right with my spirit anymore.
For example, if my daughter is sick she would pressure me with scare tactic messages early in the morning. At this point I don’t know what else to do. At this point I feel like I would have to find another job because this dynamic isn’t working and depending on this set up would put me in a very dangerous situation.
If there’s any advice or anything you recommend I would gladly appreciate it.

Girl, girlllllllll, please get your daughter into daycare and go back to work. I’m already feeling the pressure from that text… figure out somewhere you can stay for now, even if it’s a shelter. Get a job and get moving!

I remember you posting about her before and this woman is awful. You gotta find a lawyer, someone who can work on a sliding scale because this just isn’t right. She’s raking you over the coals and withholding your pay must be illegal!

Please get yourself another job. If you haven’t already started looking, it’s time to start. Have you tried applying for any type of affordable housing?

It's sounds like it's time to find another job. It does seem as she is trying to keep you accountable for work and the rent, since she is your boss and landlord. But if it's not working out you should look for other housing and employment
