Expressing

My baby is 3 days old ( born Saturday morning) he hasn’t latched at all, I had some help from midwife’s and they said he’s a lazy baby and to keep trying. I was collecting colestrol and giving it to him at the hospital but once I got back home I haven’t been able to. I would love to express but my milk has not come in yet, I’ve been using a hand expressing pump to stimulate but nothing is happening.

When can I expect it and how long will I need to express for, I’m hoping I can produce enough milk to only top him up if he needs it. Also how often should
I try to express.

Didn’t expect this party to be so hard 🙈

Try looking for a tongue tie, we thought all was good with our little girl but turns out we’ve only just found her tongue tie (the lactation consultant and midwife didn’t find it either and said all was fine and that maybe just express as she couldn’t latch at all)

Or try a tube system you can attach to your nipple/breast and drip through any milk you have or formula if you’re supplementing for now

Try skin to skin even if not latching yo stimulate hormones

Id say pump every 2/½hours. My baby was on heavy drugs and didnt latch till 2½weeks old just kept pumping regularly then when she was ready she latched, dont put any pressure on yourself or baby x

I wanted to exclusively pump, but I was told by the midwives that the best way for baby to get colostrum is actually breastfeed. Colostrum is so thick and sticky I was told it just gets lost in the pumps. I ended up breastfeeding for around 4 days until my milk came in then switched to pumping. My supply wasn’t great though and it was hard to keep up with her! We’re now almost 4 weeks and she’s combi-fed x

Congratulations Pola!
Breastfeeding is a learning process and just remember to take each day as it comes.
The best advice I can give to you is lots of skin to skin with baby - this will help milk production and offer opportunities to go to the breast.

As you are only 3 days in I’d try hand expressing as colostrum is quite thick and pump may not be as effective. Your pumping should mimic the frequency baby is expected to go to the breast - so at least 8-10 times in a 24 hour period.

Try to keep as calm as you can as cortisol (stress hormones) can impact your love hormones (oxytocin) which you need to help you produce and maintain your supply.

This is a great resource to help and refer to as and when you need it:

Mounjaro

Is mounjaro allowed to be taken whilst breastfeeding? I’m not on it yet, but considering it as it’s the only thing that helps me lose some weight due to my health conditions.

Tired 10 weeks postpartum mum needing reassurance from formula-feeding mums 🙏

Hi mums, I’m 10 weeks postpartum and feeling so burnt out. My baby doesn't latch, so I’ve been pumping and mixed feeding. Pumping is exhausting me, and I’m really thinking about quitting.

Because I work in healthcare, the guilt is hitting me hard and I keep overthinking the benefits of breast milk. But my mental and physical health are slipping.

Would love to hear from moms whose babies are 100% formula-fed. Please tell me your formula babies are thriving and that you got your sanity back! Need some reassurance today. 🙏

Struggling with feeding

My little girl is 7.5 weeks and we are struggling with feeding. When she takes the bottle, halfway into a feed she will be hysterically crying and want to continue to eat but keeps pulling off. This happens with the boob but not as much as only feeding boob mainly at night with a few day feeds. She will take the bottle if she’s either tired or distracted. Has anyone experienced this please? It started around 1.5 weeks ago and we are mainly doing pumped breast milk. Hoping this is just a phase 😩

Baby not burping - consequences?

My little one is 5 weeks old and does not wind!! No matter what I do. I try for like 15 minutes and he doesn’t bring anything up, I tend to keep him lying on me after feeding if I can’t wind him and he’s normally ok. There’s been the odd occasion he’s spat up when I’ve led him down but it’s very rare. What is the consequences if he is not burped? It’s stressing me out because surely he has something to bring up and don’t want him being uncomfortable 🙈
