Had to wait until 6.5/7 months as daughter wasn’t ready for weaning, and I’ve been doing purées. We very quickly moved out of the ultra thin purées and are now on a blitzed/mashed texture to which she takes very well and really loves her food. Tried everything and likes it!
However she does not get on with finger food at all. I try a piece a day, banana, toast etc and she gags (also actually choked on toast a week ago which scared the life out of me). I’m openly trying her and exposing her to finger foods but she just does not get on with it! Anyone else in a similar boat?
I had the same approach with my eldest - purées, gradually increasing the texture until it was solid food and she eats beautifully and has a fantastic varied diet and has never been overly fussy. But she was eating finger foods along with purées quite well.
I’ve only been weaning her since Easter so it’s been 6 weeks. Is this just something I need to give time?

Give it time, my little one still gags on stuff but when I saw the health visitor for his 8 month check she said choking as in they go blue etc is very very rare.. you just have to think about foods that may block their airway eaten whole (blueberries) I’ve avoided them until she said just give it a go.
Keep offering finger foods.. they may not eat much but the picking it up, putting to mouth and tasting is huge progress.
Crumpets are good, we use unsalted butter and marmite.. massive hit!
About 4pm though I offer a full pouch of 7+ pouch to help fill him up for bed 😊

And I've had the opposite. Hates being spoon fed, dislikes purées, but will grab cutlery and finger food, will even swallow some
