Anyone kids with severe speech delays age 3 who didn’t show signs of autism - still go on to talk?

If so did they….

Completely non verbal at age 2?

Babble and make lots of sounds before the actually started on words?

Did they say the odd ‘popout’ word or sound and then never again?

We’re the gesturing and communicating in all other ways? Inc sign

Were the focussed and engaged and otherwise seemed like they wanted to talk ?

Did they get very frustrated and just make one constant ‘eh’ or ‘aaaaaaaaah’ shouting / strained sound?

Any other significant things did or didn’t do before they started talking or did you ever realise why?

I’m concerned my son has Childhood Apraxia of speech as his presentation even at 2 is already matching this. I’m holding out hope and this is why I’ve written this post. We will still obviously get him the support he needs but it breaks my heart to think he could have this condition.

I really just want to enjoy these early years; he’s such a delightful boy but it breaks my heart to think he could be trapped in a body that can’t speak and even if he does manage to learn, it’ll be years if not a decade of intense therapy which we don’t have the money for..we will find it somehow though..

Also, autism has pretty much been ruled out at this stage as he has absolutely no traits apart from being non verbal

Thanks 🙏

Well ... Me. I was nearly 5 before I was speaking. Although I did babble a lot but according to my mother it was like a language of my own and I didn't seem to care if nobody understood me. I did get a little speech therapy because it was delaying my entry into school

Where are you based?
My daughter started school pre verbal. Started talking properly by age 7. Her older brother has autism so knew it wasn’t that. It was like the muscles in her mouth wernt developed. Possibly verbal dyspraxia. She got an ehcp and had weekly speech therapy. She made her own signs. Did try makaton but she didn’t take to it as quite a bit older. Socially and academically she’s always been fine. I’m sure your son will be fine x

My youngest brother was nonverbal for a long while, his older brother also didn’t speak in sentences until he was 4, but they both started speaking with super huge vocabularies out of nowhere.

They both went to speech therapy, only the youngest one is diagnosed with autism, my older younger brother is neurotypical as far as we are aware 🤷‍♀️

(I myself am autistic & My son is minimally verbal, not typically ever conversational, still at 3 years old. We’ve gone for evaluations with the school district when he was 2, they basically told us to wait it out until they revisited another eval when he’s older)
