My son’s pediatrician told me at his 12 month appt that he was 5 lbs under weight and needs more iron. She said it’s because I’m still breastfeeding. My son will only drink water and breastmilk (from the boob). I finally got him to drink some milk but only if it’s 50/50 with water and in a certain cup. He’s a great eater and now on iron supplements. Idk what to do, I’m trying to give him extra protein, vitamin C (iron absorption)and whole fat yogurt, etc. I feel like I’m not doing enough for him and I’m a bad mom. Any advice or words of encouragement?

Your son looks perfectly healthy and not at all underweight from the photo. It sounds like you’re doing everything right. There is nothing wrong with continuing breastfeeding past 12 months and it is still beneficial. I personally would seek a second option or a different paediatrician as they seem to be fear-mongering.

I wouldn't worry about the 5 pounds underweight. Hes at the age where he can eat whatever you are eating for food as well. My son was in the 1 percentile for his weight for 9 months of his life. The doctor was baffled with how much he ate and everything. He said as long as hes meeting his milestones hes fine. Just feed him 3 table meals a day and breastmilk/formula. Your son definitely does not look malnourished. Id also find a new pediatrician.

From his neck and thighs, he looks perfectly healthy

Hey girl, my son was iron deficient and we were able to correct it in one month using iron supplements and prioritizing protein / leafy greens at every meal. Mine was fed breastmilk until 12 months. Don’t worry about him being 5 pounds underweight for his age. My son is less than 1% for growth and is healthy as stated by our paediatrician. I would say fine meals that you’re able to hide easily iron rich foods and incorporate them into your son‘s diet.good luck ! :)

How many lbs is he ?
Is he eating cereal and meat ?

He might be underweight but he doesn't look malnourished, your doing great by the sounds of it, my son was underweight and they told me to stop breastfeeding and give him more food, but I found what worked for me was giving 4 small meals and offer 2 snacks, most of the time he didnt want the snacks , he would only have milk at nap time anyway but it definitely wasn't breastmilk that made him underweight, he is now smaller that I've stopped giving my eldest the boob.
just thought I'll point out, iron supplements work better if you take them every other day, as then it's given time to work it's magic, otherwise ur just consuming it without ur body actually taking in thr benefits from it.

Why would it be from breastfeeding still? I feel like that’s misinformation, the WHO advise until they’re two. He looks perfectly healthy to me, I would say that I put so much peanut butter in yogurts etc for my son to fatten him up xx

I’m in the UK so I’m not sure if it’s the same but my daughter was in the 3rd percentile at 12 months and the health visitor told me she needed to go to the doctor. My doctor stated as long as she is meeting mile stones does show any danger signs (floppy, laboured breathing ect.) she was fine just on the smaller side.
Every baby is different and kids grow at different rates he looks like a happy baby and you’re doing your great! Focus on the what you can dos rather than things you can’t change. ❤️❤️

Mine is not underweight by medical standards but definitely a smaller boy and I have been adding peanut butter and milled seeds into his morning porridge.

Just wanted to say that you obviously care a lot about your baby and that on itself makes you a great mom.

Sometimes a doctor says something needs to be addressed but we take it more seriously and personally than they intended. If they stated he’s under the average weight and low on iron, those are simply facts. A lot of people here are assuming you’re feeding solids along with breastfeeding, but that isn’t explicitly stated, so if you aren’t, that might be why the doctor brought it up.
