Are these a waste of money?

I’m told my family that buying this kind of stuff is a waste of money. I have a 3 and 4 yr old. I really need some educational stuff right!!??

My son is not yet 2 and he’s really into the flash card type things in your initial post. He’s getting really good at identifying objects, and he started (hit and miss) getting some colours, mainly blue! So I defo think they’re worthwhile…

No depends on the cost , if it’s too much then try a dollar store

I found lots of stuff like this at thrift shops and on market place so I didn’t have to spend a lot on it :) I would recommend that if it’s something you want to try out for your family. My son loves it! We also do activity sheets I print out for free and I do a lot of crafts I find them very educational as well

Both min had speech delay so we used these a lot.

IMO, books have worked out better for us. They are very portable. They hold up pretty well. We have done some dry erase type workbooks. Those are great because you get lots of use out of them. I tried flash cards and my kids lost interest quickly. I have a similar age gap to you. I have a 5 and an almost 4 year old. I also find that most learning happens on the go. At that age I think kids learn better by observing their environment and exploring it than anything too structured.

Buy what you want for your kids! Idk why you're consulting them/why they're offering an opinion. That said, we didn't really do flashcards, we do a lot of reading, have letter magnets, that sort of thing and our daughter has always been very advanced with her speech, recognises all the letters and every number up to 100 and has done for a long time, so they're not an essential item, if that makes sense? You say you have a 3 and 4 year old so I'd probably say the flashcards are a bit young for them? But maybe that's just me because we haven't used them, no shade on anyone who is! The sorting ones look good, but you can just get household objects/other toys to sort into colours. In conclusion imo you don't NEED any of these things but if you think it will help your children learn/help you teach them just tell your family to piss off, it's not like they cost thousands is it!

I’d think that at 3 and 4 most of this they’ll know anyway so it does seem a waste. Letter ones would be good, but you could buy those separately or make your own (my boy has an alphabet chart and I’ve made themed ones for Bluey, Cars & monster jam) but otherwise I think they’re too young and wouldn’t get good use from them

Former kindergarten teacher and I voted waste of money. You should not be flash carding 3 and 4 year olds. If you want to start “teaching” things, it should be through play.

I don’t think it hurts to have these around for the kids to play with. But if you are actively making them sit and do it, it’s bad

It’s not. But mama in life do what you want, the comments can come after. I’m stubborn I do what I want/get what I want anyone who wanna comment can comment after I already did it/bought it. If you really want something don’t let families’ opinions get in the way of that xx We have heaps of these we also have the ones where you write on it w a whiteboard marker, 3 letter words like cat etc. he sits on the couch in his free time and does them himself I don’t even need to prompt him he loves them

Malnutrition

My son’s pediatrician told me at his 12 month appt that he was 5 lbs under weight and needs more iron. She said it’s because I’m still breastfeeding. My son will only drink water and breastmilk (from the boob). I finally got him to drink some milk but only if it’s 50/50 with water and in a certain cup. He’s a great eater and now on iron supplements. Idk what to do, I’m trying to give him extra protein, vitamin C (iron absorption)and whole fat yogurt, etc. We have a nutritionist and made an appt with a different pediatrician. I feel like I’m not doing enough for him and I’m a bad mom. Any words of encouragement?

Would you quit?

I started a new job almost 3 weeks ago. A daycare teacher and my two children attend the daycare with me. They are 3 and half and 10 months old. Since starting the daycare they haven’t been doing well. We had to take this week off because they got sick. Which granted I know is a given because they’ve never been around this many germs before. However after taking my 10 month old to urgent care last weekend because he had pink eye to discover he has lost one pound since starting daycare.
I know this because a few days before starting he had his 9 month old check up. He’s not eating well and won’t drink bottles because he’s primarily breastfed.

My 3 year old isn’t doing well either. The teachers seem to be annoyed by him and his behavior. I know he needs extra help and the daycare isn’t the right environment for him which I have plans to help him in place but I’ve witnessed the teachers being a little rough with him and he has left the classroom with a mark on his arm they had no explanations for. He tried to leave the building. Which I do not believe but he did leave a classroom without the teachers knowledge. My director already told me from day 2 if this behavior continues he will no longer be allowed to attend as it’s a safety issue. Last week the director wasn’t at the center she was on vacation. A stand in director spoke to me in a manner I did not like. Claiming my son “doesn’t belong in a general education setting” and sent me home with my children on the day my son left a classroom.
Everytime I drop my children off in their classrooms they scream and cry for me. Which I know is normal but the teachers in the room don’t do much to comfort them. When they know I’m just down the hall.
In addition to all of this. I’m sensing a very toxic work environment where everyone talks about everyone behind their back and nobody is happy there. Which I also know can be common in this line of work but when you add your children to the mix. It gets scary. What would you do?

This is going to be a hard post to write

So my partner who I’ve been with for over ten yrs is just slowly grinding on me with his view on life. It’s actually embarrassing. He’s flat out racist and right wing. Today was the nail on the head when he said “I
Don’t want our kid mixing with that culture in nursery incase he touches their saliva”
Like what the heck do you say to that?
It’s a genuine problem for me now dealing with his moods because he’s so against other ethnicities and doesn’t want our child mixing with them. I’ve had a long talk with him about how this is madness and even gone as far as to tell his mum. The issue is that he’s so sweet and a great dad and I love him to bits but this is just an ugly side to him that I’m scared is gonna rub off on our child. What am I meant to do?

I'm depressed that my 3yo son always wants TV right at daycare pickup what do I do

I generally wait a bit and I have a snack ready for him and it drives me nuts that all he wants is TV when he's in the car after daycare pick up so it's really bugging me and I feel like I failed

If your 1 year old does not eat the dinner you prepared..

Would you fill up their stomach with something else they like? Pouches, snacks, cereals, yogurts? Or just give milk?

Nobody to look after our toddler when I give birth

Unbelievably, I'm 38 weeks pregnant and we still don't have a proper plan in place for when I give birth for who will look after our 3 year old. We are planning a home birth and just hoping that it'll happen during the night. We have hired a doula who can help us out by either staying with me while my husband settles my toddler/drives him to nursery etc or goes and plays with him herself. But both my husband and I agree we aren't comfortable with leaving him with the doula if we need to transfer into hospital as she is essentially a stranger to him (we've only met her once). We know a couple of local families who may be able to look after our son for a couple hours at most. Again, we aren't particularly close with anyone so we wouldn't feel comfortable leaving him overnight with anyone. No family around, except my brother who is a 2 hour drive from us and told us he's too busy to help....wtf do we do...so stressed...has anyone here ever brought their toddler to hosptial? Or left their husband/partner at home to look after toddler? I'm devastated at the thought of my husband missing the birth but I think it would be the least stressful option?
