Learning at nursery

So my little one’s just turned one and he’s starting nursery later this month. His nursery doesn’t offer any basic learning/curriculum at all until 3 years. My baby is quite a fast learner so I was hoping he would pick up new things at nursery like colours and 123.

Is this the case at other nurseries too? They only do singing, interactive/messy play. Am I expecting too much lol

As a nursery practitioner you are expecting too much, if you want him to learn these extras then that’s something to be done at home, but they learn through play and singing and signing and don’t need to know colours and numbers that young, we do have colours and numbers available to them but only if they take an interest in them and this can be done through storytime and songs

My little one has only in the last couple of months got really into colours and she’s nearly 2 / she doesn’t go nursery, it’ll come x

Learning through play is the best way of learning for young children (even for school age ones).

Singing is a fantastic way of modelling language and non-verbal communication styles and is a fantastic way to really learn and strengthen the fundamentals of communication. Interactive and messy play also has benefits in terms of dexterity and fine motor skills too. There’s a whole catalogue of things they need to learn before colours and 123.

Our little one is coming up 15 months and they do activities and link them with areas of development. So for example he did some colouring the other week but he was able to exercise choice making by choosing a pen/brush/crayon he wanted to use and then practicing holding different tools to colour was good for his physical development too.

You’re definitely expecting too much in the sense that you are over looking some really important activities they are doing which will help his development.

They *do* offer those things, just maybe not in the structured way you see at 3+ years when they move towards school readiness. If they’re ready to, they’ll pick up all sorts.

My daughter is 19 months and is learning through messy play, water play, singing and actions etc at her childminders. It’s nice seeing pictures of her getting involved and having fun this way. X

They'll learn through play. For example, they'll do water play and sing 1 2 3 4 5 fish alive. Then later they'll reinforce counting by saying 'oh look how many teddies are sitting on the chair? Shall we count together?'

They'll point out shapes and colours when they are doing playdoh.

They'll learn about animals through play, if they live in the sea or in the farm.

He will definitely pick up colours and basic numbers.

But for now, social, emotional and motor skills are the priority. You want your child to be able to hold a pencil when they enter school, and sit nicely on the floor, not count to 100

Favourite children

My partner has a child with a previous ex, a girl who’s now 4. He buys her everything, clothes, toys, plans days out, absolutely everything. Everytime I’ve mentioned how I can’t wait to do something such as a bike for our 11 month old son as these were prime memories of my childhood he will go out and buy the thing I’ve mentioned for his other child. I’ve also started recently collecting blue nose teddies for my son and there small and can be safely in his cot and when I was small I used to collect certain lines of teddies, I then later found out he started doing the same thing for his child with his ex partner yet shows no interest in me doing it for our son. He hasn’t bought him anything since he’s been born or even when I was pregnant and when he promised to help when he was a newborn he was bearly ever here however when he had his baby with his ex and they split up pretty soon he’d go round to help with bath and bed 3 days a week.

I’m also pretty sure he ditched me and his son to go and spend Father’s Day with his other child at his own dads house as I had lots of things planned and he didn’t show up. Bearing in mind I was so so excited because this is the first ever Father’s Day I ever got to plan as it may not be a first for him but it’s a big first for me. He never plans any days out for me and my son it’s always me and I buy everything, every toy and every item of clothing. Ontop of that his first birthdays coming up soon and I’ve chosen all the gifts and planned the whole party on my own but when it comes down to his child with his previous partner he goes out and spends hundreds. He even ditched my son and I on Christmas Eve to go out and spend 4 hours in Smyths for his other child and didn’t bring 1 thing back for our son (don’t get me wrong, he was 3 months old then) but even just a little gesture or teddy or anything. I had to go shopping for our son for his Christmas presents on my own whilst he did that.

He despises his ex as she lied to him about being on birth control and hr never wanted a child with her but did want one with me so why does he do nothing for my son but does everything for his other child and also helped out his ex partner more when she lives with her parents and didn’t do anything for me when Blake was born and I was all on my own.

Is the relationship broken??

So me and my boyfriend had a little chat yesterday and he had told me that he enjoys his alone time more than being around me. He says that he sometimes feels suffocated because I’m a very energetic person. I told him that I am really trying to work on myself, but that lately I’m having a lot of insecurities due to our distance. He told me that I can’t force him to say that we’re gonna be okay because I was crying. I felt horrible because of it because it wasn’t my intention to guilt trip him. Now I’m really unsure where we’re going with our relationship. He says he wants to work on us and that he loves me, but I personally have the feeling that he might’ve already pulled out of this relationship.

I feel stuck… what do I do?

Ready to give in to intervention- rant

39+5 and I am honestly ready to give up and cry. I am getting daily messages from people asking how I am, any sign of baby etc... And I am so done. Already last week I started ignoring people but they just keep messaging! My dad intentionally calls me to wind me up to the point I've told him if he does it again I'll be blocking him (he already isn't respecting boundaries telling me I WILL tell him I'm in labour so he can come visit me in hospital even though I've said no). The only way I feel like I can get through this is by being in my bubble and it's hard when you're getting constant messages. I'm tired, I'm fed up, I'm grumpy and people will be told when baby is here so why can't they just leave me alone. I don't want intervention but I am so ready to give in. Not great for the oxytocin production 🤣
