Reassurance please

Hi all, just after some reassurance as everything online tells me to be worried!

My son is almost 18 months old and still doesn’t say any proper words. He literally says “Ga” to everything.

He does respond to his name, points, waves, follows most commands (like “bring me the ball”..etc).

Should I be worried he’s not speaking yet, or have others experienced this and their children were just later developing speech?

I rang the health visitor about a month ago for this same thing. After telling her everything she could do and talking it through she explained there were two parts to communication, my daughter was really advanced in one side (pointing, engaging, responding, following commands) but not verbally which was the other side.
Shed gone from saying some words to basically nothing.

HV wasnt concerned at all but we took steps to just help, tv became a no-no (we didnt watch alot anyway but it was there and a distraction). Started constantly reading and repeating animal sounds at every chance we got, didnt ask her to repeat just kept doing it.. a month on shes making loads of animal sounds, shes saying more and more words and come on leaps and bounds.

I was worried too but hv told me that if she hadn't progressed by the 2yr check thays when they would look to refer for speech therapy etc.

Hope this helps xx

Please do not worry, my son was exactly the same along with 2 other boys in our circle. Speech is one of those milestones that has a very wide range of normal. You could have toddlers speaking full sentences at 18 months and some not saying a single word.

I was constantly worried about my son and then a month before his second birthday he suddenly started saying new words every day. By the time he had his 2 year check up he was completely average.

Once he turns 2 you can contact your HV to do the 2 year review and if they are worried they can help with speech therapy. I wouldn't worry until then x

Don’t worry my son is 23 months and doesn’t speak as much as my nieces did. Nursery and my sister who is a teacher says he is ok.

I have 3 year old twins who are both on the pathway for autism diagnosis.

The fact that he has gestures is very reassuring and following commands is great!

My twin girl is 3 and still doesn’t do that but she is also non verbal and never said a word.

My son did all those things and was just a late talker.. his speech exploded around his 3rd birthday and now he doesn’t shut up to be honest 😂

If he’s making gestures and following commands I wouldn’t worry too much

Mine was exactly the same he’s 3 in Feb and the last 6/8 weeks he’s gone from the odd word to nearly forming sentences it’s mental how quickly it came on I think all just come at their own pace and that’s why the health visitor review isn’t until they are 2 and half because a lot of development happens when they are two xx

Can we talk vaccinations?🙏🏼

Question for the mums 🩷

Are you/have you vaccinating/vaccinated your baby? 💉

If yes, what made you decide to vaccinate? Are you glad you did?

And if not, I’d love to hear your reasons why.

No judgement either way… just interested in hearing different parents’ thoughts and experiences. 🤍

Bottle formula feed help 10m

Hi moms!

My LO is 10m and has been refusing milk. We formula feed him since young.

He prefers drinking water than milk but NHS (UK) guidance said babies need 400ml
Of milk until 12 months.
He’s now drinking only 200 or less.

What do I do?? Any1 experienced this?

Also few weeks back he seems to not want to suck from
Bottle anymore, how he drinks is by chewing instead of proper suck like he used to. I think after his upper
Tooth came out. Has any1 had this with their LO as well?

Negative midwife experience

Hi beautiful ladies,

I’m feeling absolutely awful about my latest midwife appointment. I’m going through the public health system so every visit is a new/different midwife. I went in for my 28 week appointment, and when the midwife asked how my mental health was I told her it was up and down and I’m after a referral for the free psychologist program offered (🇦🇺), she looked almost annoyed at me and told me I need to talk to my own psychologist before she gives me a referral. She also asked about my support network - I told her that my dad had passed away from mental heath and my mum has a carer and addiction issues. We have a positive relationship but it’s not possible or practical to rely on her. I explained that my only other family is two brothers who live two states away and do FIFO work. I explained that my partners family all live interstate with the closest being his mum who is two hours away. She told me that it’s simply not good enough and that I need to get my mum to stay with me to help me and help with the baby, I explained to her that she unfortunately can’t stay with me because she is a long term addict and that isn’t an option. After this, she reiterated that I need to have someone to come stay with me for a week or two at a time and if I can’t find anyone, I’m going to be hiding inside my wardrobe crying at 4am, she reiterated this multiple times.

Does anyone else here have limited to no support and have been grilled by midwives about this?

I’m considering ringing the hospital and requesting not to see that midwife again

Ps. Just noting that I am completely okay, I’ve lived my entire life without parents or a support system and this is just another thing. The midwife just really got in there with a dagger
