13 Month Review

So my daughter goes to nursery and recently they have reported back about her communication saying it not where they’d expect. Has anyone else had this?

I’d say she isn’t too bad with her communication, she says a few meaningful words, she understands what you say and follows it. She understands gestures like opening and shutting when you say open etc. she points to things she wants.

I constantly talk to her saying the names of objects etc, show her book and name things in them. I sign a lot of gestures that I hope she’ll start to use.

No doubt the nursery are doing what we pay them for by doing observations, and I definitely want my child to progress. But I just feel it’s a bit harsh as I’m doing everything already that they recommend to build communication.

I just don’t know what else to do.

Can anyone help?

Hey from what u have described, it sounds like she’s where she needs to be. I’ve worked in nurseries for over 10 years and personally wouldn’t have any concerns!

It sounds very normal. My daughter didn't say very many words at that age but now she is 2.5 and talks all the time. I remember feeling worried because one of the kids her age was talking a lot at that age and it's hard to compare with other kids because they are all different. I also met a little girl at the park whose Mom said her daughter didn't say much until 2 and then just started talking perfectly. I think some kids are just more observing rather than thinking out loud if that makes sense!

Sometimes they do that because maybe your kid has a little delay for they age or maybe they are in the spectrum and they need to be diagnosed. It's no like judging you is just to let you know

My pediatrician told me (around the same age as yours) that my baby was just accumulating words. She knows what they mean (and may say some too), but within the next few month language skills will blossom. My girl is 19 months now and knows so many words....more than I ever knew she was getting. Just keep doing what you are doing, and if you see cause for concern, talk to your doctor. Besides, kids act different at daycare. She may not be communicating to her teachers like she does to you. They can only say what they observe.

Reassurance please

Hi all, just after some reassurance as everything online tells me to be worried!

My son is almost 18 months old and still doesn’t say any proper words. He literally says “Ga” to everything.

He does respond to his name, points, waves, follows most commands (like “bring me the ball”..etc).

Should I be worried he’s not speaking yet, or have others experienced this and their children were just later developing speech?

Negative midwife experience

Hi beautiful ladies,

I’m feeling absolutely awful about my latest midwife appointment. I’m going through the public health system so every visit is a new/different midwife. I went in for my 28 week appointment, and when the midwife asked how my mental health was I told her it was up and down and I’m after a referral for the free psychologist program offered (🇦🇺), she looked almost annoyed at me and told me I need to talk to my own psychologist before she gives me a referral. She also asked about my support network - I told her that my dad had passed away from mental heath and my mum has a carer and addiction issues. We have a positive relationship but it’s not possible or practical to rely on her. I explained that my only other family is two brothers who live two states away and do FIFO work. I explained that my partners family all live interstate with the closest being his mum who is two hours away. She told me that it’s simply not good enough and that I need to get my mum to stay with me to help me and help with the baby, I explained to her that she unfortunately can’t stay with me because she is a long term addict and that isn’t an option. After this, she reiterated that I need to have someone to come stay with me for a week or two at a time and if I can’t find anyone, I’m going to be hiding inside my wardrobe crying at 4am, she reiterated this multiple times.

Does anyone else here have limited to no support and have been grilled by midwives about this?

I’m considering ringing the hospital and requesting not to see that midwife again

Ps. Just noting that I am completely okay, I’ve lived my entire life without parents or a support system and this is just another thing. The midwife just really got in there with a dagger

Naps with a cold? (Potential chickenpox)

My little girl is 1 next week and has been completely off, she’s screamed for 2.5 hours last night before bed only to sleep for 2.5hpurs and wake up at 11:15-1:50. She woke up this morning at 8:45 and was awake but looked so tired bless her. I’ve been trying since roughly half 9 to get her down for her morning nap, she’s yawning and rubbing her eyes but fully refusing, screaming, arching her back and shaking her head. She’s screamed that much she’s sweating. She’s got a couple spots on her face and a snotty nose. She’s just not herself. I’ve had very little sleep dealing with her last night and I’m also unwell. I literally could cry with her. She’s been so off. I went on my hen do and stayed away on Saturday so thought it could be maybe she just missed me but this isn’t right, and I’ve got no one to come and help just give me 5 minutes to have a quick shower and a break because my fiancé is at work. Any advice?

My 16 week old absolutely hates being in the car seat, we have tired everything to try keep him occupied in the seat he will be fine for 5mins then screams, a few times not he’s screamed himself to sleep because there’s nothing that will smooth him while in there once he gets too far into crying.

Any tips on how to get them to like the car welcome!!! 🙏
