Husband spanking toddler

So as the title states my husband spanked our 3 year old 7 times yesterday because she had a fit about getting out of the bath and telling him no. I was across the house but heard the spanking so I ran to where they were and told him to stop.

She has been testing her boundaries a lot this week which for the most part I have been able to handle and explain why certain things can’t go certain ways. I stay at home all week and he usually is home Sundays to play with them otherwise it’s me from the moment they wake up until right before they go to bed.

He woke up in a crappy mood due to a headache and I took both kids to the playground and made breakfast etc while he slept in.

When I stopped him and told him to get away from her he stomped off and I put on a little show while I went to talk to him. (This is the third time I’ve caught him spanking her and we have discussed it even before I’ve witnessed it)

He just sat there looking off into space and ignored everything I said and then said that clearly what I’m doing isn’t working for her “defiance”. This instance has left a terrible taste in my mouth. I am not sure what to do now. My daughter was terrified of him for the rest of the day and didn’t want to see him. I slept in my kids room with both of them last night and haven’t talked since yesterday to him after trying to talk and him not acknowledging his wrongdoing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also my family is all 1000 miles away and we live near his family. I’m close with my MIL but this is her son.

I’d definitely just sit down and talk with him. Some people spank or grew up in a spanking house hold and some don’t. If it was 7 times for that one tantrum she did I think that’s a bit excessive. But I’d just share why you don’t think it’s right and explain how she was scared of him. Yall need to be on the same page when it comes to discipline

Honestly if you’ve talked to him three times about what is literally abuse of your child and he isn’t stopping I would seriously be considering divorce for the safety of your toddler. I have a two year old who has hit the tantrum and defiance stage and if I caught my husband doing this I would be devastated. If I told him to stop and he continued I would be leaving.

It's one thing to go with what you're taught, and be ignorant to child development. To refuse new information and insist on acting off of ego is problematic.
She is doing what shes supposed to do at her age. Testing boundaries and learning autonomy is supposed to happen.

This is impactful and wont really mix well raising in opposite ways. So do you want to fight about it indefinitely?

I’d be really concerned too. Spanking a 3-year-old seven times, especially when she was already upset and then being terrified of him afterwards, goes way beyond “discipline” to me. And the fact you’ve already discussed this more than once and he still did it again is a huge part of the problem.
I wouldn’t leave her alone with him until you genuinely feel she’s safe. I’d document what happened, including the date and anything she says or any marks, and tell someone you trust so you’re not carrying this alone. If there are any marks/injuries, I’d get her checked. I’d also tell him very clearly that hitting her is not acceptable and cannot happen again — but only have that conversation if you feel safe doing so.
You don’t have to decide your whole marriage today, but I definitely wouldn’t minimise this just because he had a headache or she was being “defiant.” She’s 3. Testing boundaries is normal; being hit repeatedly by a parent isn’t. 🤍

What has helped with my husband who tended to shut down on me when he’s feeling overwhelmed was to give him time to calm down before trying to re-address it. I would offer my support as a partner whether through a comforting hug and kiss or by supporting him through small acts that I know he appreciates. If I was upset by it too this is sometimes delayed until I’ve calmed down myself too. Taking time for this step helped him think we were addressing it together rather than being opposing forces.

Since he would try to dismiss my explanations I would forward excerpts or short videos on child development - normal behavior for the age and suggestions on how to handle it -from the experts. Sometimes he wouldn’t take the advice well from me as I think he felt I was either criticizing him or coming from an emotional place of wanting to comfort my child (which is not wrong) but he wanted to be sure there was logic behind that, you know? That we weren’t perpetuating “bad behavior”.

Would he respond to reason? Could you send him articles and studies on the harms of spanking? Can you keep trying to have a conversation with him? Ask him if he was spanked, and if he was, what did it teach him? To not get caught doing something bad. Did it bring him closer to his parents to confide in them? Very doubtful. Could you help him identify what triggers him to be reactive and spank? Could you try telling him other ways to respond? Or tell him that if he feels like he wants to spank, to instead take a moment to breathe and think of a natural consequence instead or to talk to you to get help on what to do.
I think you’d have to keep talking to him over and over until he gets it. And of course modeling to him how to respond to your child when she tests the boundaries.

Report to nursery or not...?

My husband works with the husband of one of the staff members at nursery. My oldest child had just left and gone to school, youngest is still there.

My husband's college asked today how our eldest is getting on at school, my husband said he's doing really well and his college replied saying that's good my wife said he was a little shit at nursery....

It's left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth when he told me about it. I'm not sure whether to speak to the room leader about it, if I do whether to actually give the staff members name or not and just ask for them to have a general word with all staff...? Or just leave it as I'm assuming she knew her husband works with my husband and that they're friendly?

First day of childcare

My 10 month little girl has gone to a childminder for the first full day. I’m really struggling and miss her so much. Anyone else finding it difficult? Her first name was loads shorter than usual, she hasn’t taken a bottle and not had much for lunch. Were your babies the same?

Looking for some support! ❤️

Is anyone weaning their babies?

My baby is showing all the signs and capable of holding her head up. I’m thinking of maybe just giving her some porridge of a morning. Would this be weird to just give her porridge for ‘breakfast’ whilst she’s not 6m as I feel because she’s not yet I don’t want to full wean.

I can't bare the clinginess😭

Please don't judge my choice of words but my baby is unbearable and is making me miserableand struggle to enjoy his company now. His neediness is driving both me and my husband into absolute misery. He will not stop whining and crying unless held. No exaggeration, he is just a whinge bag and I struggle so much now. Im dosed up on Ibuprofen every day because my shoulder is so sore, now my back is hurting too from compensating my posture. I cannot get anything done. And YES I BABY WEAR. But he is 8+kg now, and I can barely get anything done like that and I think at 7 months he shouldn't be carried all the time. He doesn't roll because he doesn't spend enough time on the floor. As soon as he's down he'll scream rather than play/ try. He's trying to sit up, but peobably because he is in a sitting position being held all day. If he's not held its the same in the bouncer, seat, high chair. Nothing helps. I worry his muscles won't develop properly because of this. The overwhelm in my head is unbearable. I feel trapped and miserable, and no I can't walk around in the pram all day either, I live in a tiny village. Has anyone's older child done this? Did they turn out clingy when older? Will this get better? Or am I stuck with a needy clingy child now? 😭😭😭 ps I have a 4 Yr old too so that makes it even harder.
