Explaining Cremation to a kid?

My mom died in August. We have her ashes, but I haven't done anything with them yet. I plan on having her stay in the living room, as I think she'd want to be with us (she was the most dedicated, loving grandma to my kids)

My two year old obviously has no idea what's going on but my six year old does. He avoids speaking about her to me because seeing me upset upsets him. I've been trying my best to grieve away from him but that's been hard.

I want him to know why we will have her in the living room, but I'm not sure how to even explain that it's her ashes. Has anyone had to navigate this before who has advice. Me and his dad will both be there to help explain, especially because I can't speak about her yet without sobbing.

Im so sorry for your loss. Definitely hard with kids in the picture. I personally would put them where you feel comfortable. I wouldnt go out of my way to explain, unless they asked. My sons father passed almost 2 years ago. He has a shadow box in his room and it has his ashes in a necklace. Hes 7 and honestly has never even asked about it. My husbands mother passed and she was also cremated. He has a necklace with her ashes. I know if my son asks, I would tell him the truth. How we do really get ashes. I believe kids need to know the truth, but ill wait for them to ask. I will probably also have my husband talk to him about it, he was 7 when he lost his mom. So I just think its something they can both talk about, understand each other. If that makes sense.
