Speech Therapy

My LO had her 15 month ped appt and her ped said she should be saying 8-10 words…she is referring us to a speech therapist because she only says around 4-5 words (she babbles like crazy tho). FTM - should I be concerned? I thought every baby is different and develops speech at their own pace? Anyone in the same boat?

I’m in the same boat with my 15 month old son. He’s just started food therapy and the therapist said to work on sign language and him recognizing what the words mean will help a lot more. The recognition of words to objects that my son can do doesn’t worry her to start speech therapy right now

My 15 month old boy also doesn’t say a lot of words. I’d say mostly 3 to 4 words. He babbles a lot as well. We just had his doctor’s appointment last week and when we brought this up to the doctor, he said that he is not too concerned (he scored average on his assessment). He said that if our son is not saying more words by the time he’s 18 months, then he will direct us to a speech therapist. Our son also babbles a lot and seems like he is not in a rush to say a lot of words. I am not too worried about it, because like you said every baby is very different. My husband was a little bit more concerned, but we’ll see what happens when our son turns 18 months.

My 15 month old had his appointment last week. His pediatrician wasn’t all too concerned that he didn’t talk more yet (he only has 3 words, but had a handful more of signs for communication) and she sees most toddlers talking up a storm come 2, but she said she was going to send us a referral for speech therapy as it doesn’t hurt to start that early in case there is any problems. Also FTM. I don’t feel too concerned because i understand his signs and his ways to communicate to me, but i think I’ll partake in the speech therapy as I’m sure they’ll offer up ideas to help progress him forward.

I'm in the same boat, except my daughter's Dr. was saying that at her 12 month appointment & I've chosen to ignore her Dr. I was really beating myself up over it at first, but only a week or two after her appointment, her vocabulary exploded and she now says about 7 or 8 words all on her own, without speech therapy intervention. You can do this mama. Just keep speaking to your baby and sounding words out slowly, reading to them, allowing them to watch educational videos (if you are comfortable allowing a little screen time. In my opinion, Miss Rachel is 100% the reason my daughter says so many words. Her videos are a way better motivator for my daughter than I could be.)

I'm not against speech therapy, or early intervention, but in my opinion, the fact that your child says any words at all is a good sign. My nephew didn't speak at all til he was 3 and he doesn't even have autism, hes a perfectly typical, smart 5 year old now. I hope this can ease some of your worries!

My LO also had his 15 month appt just last week. He has zero words but babbles a lot and has his own word the meaning of which only he knows. Doctor did recommend getting him evaluated. I am thinking of waiting till end of 16/17 months and then get him evaluated if he still has no words

We got my girl evaluated and started speech therapy! Her therapist isn’t that concerned and thinks she just needs a little extra help to catch up! She said some kids just have a delays and we’ll be completely fine

My 15 month old son doesn't say much either, he goes mm-ma, baba, Dada, says ball but is still learning. He's starting to say papa, but it's all mostly babble too. Don't know what we can do about speech therapy, the only place nearby that takes my insurance dropped my baby because we weren't able to go due to the Spokane fires, we were even in contact with them about it as they were in the evacuation zone =l

Just had our 15 month appointment today. My daughter doesn't really say any words at all, and the doc said she is right on the border of concern. She is going to call us in a month and a half to check in. My baby is very social and points, waves, understands commands, signs a little, and so I'm trying not to be too worried.

Um no, what's up with that? The CDC has very different milestones for a 15 month old. 1 or 2 words is perfect at that age. I would be looking for a new Dr. She seems very poorly educated.

I’m a speech therapist and my 15 month old is around 6-10 words with signing and babbling. Receptive language develops first, so most important to ensure they comprehend.. expressive language to follow! As long as they are trying to communicate and/or pointing and indicating needs/wants, no need to be concerned!!! (But also, going to speech therapy is a great way to socialize your LO and learn as parents the best ways to carry over strategies at home! Make sure to ask for a home program!!) . Open to any more questions/feedback, just message me!

Birth thoughts

Hi guys.
I’m having a bit of a difficult time talking about my birth because I feel like I cheated it almost. It’s hard listening to other mamas stories and I feel like I didn’t do anything or much because of interventions. I had to be induced due to waters breaking and was put on the oxytocin drip - I then had the epidural because the contractions were crazy. They turned the drip off at some point because my body took over. Then the delivery… I ended up with an episiotomy and forceps. I just feel like I didn’t actually ‘give birth’ if that makes sense? Like I feel a bit embarrassed talking about it. Did anyone else have this feeling?

How do you survive the 4am contact-sleep shift? 🤯

How do you cope with the early morning shift with a baby who refuses to sleep anywhere but on you? 🫠😂

We currently do shifts - I’m on duty from 8:30pm to 4:30am, then my husband takes over from 4:30am to 8:30am so I can get some uninterrupted sleep.

The problem is baby basically stops sleeping in his cot from around 4am and will only sleep on us, so my husband ends up staying awake holding him until my shift is over. 🥲

Husband is going away for two nights for work soon, and I’m honestly wondering how on earth I’m going to manage those early mornings on my own! 😭

Mums who’ve been through this, how did you cope? Did your babies eventually grow out of it, or did you find anything that helped? Would love to hear your experiences! ❤️

Colostrum

I’ve been trying to harvest some colostrum for a week now every day and have only ever managed to get a tiny pin head amount out of one boob.
I’m honestly so deflated and it’s made me so upset every day as I’m not able to do it - does this mean I’m going to hate/not be able to breastfeed? It’s making me really sad every day when I’ve spent a hour a few times a day and just can’t get anything

Non Speaking

My Boy just turned 2 in September, my concern is that he still doesn't have any clear words, he points and gestures like hands me his empty bottle or grabs things he wants but doesn't verbally say anything... His hearing is fine I know that, he barely gets screen time either and I am trying my hardest to verbalize everything I do or repeat words when he wants something.. anybody else got this problem or advice?🫠
