I'm at 27 weeks and just diagnosed with GD. My fasting numbers were particularly high. I am a sweet tooth gal and especially with Christmas coming up I feel so sad about not being able to eat Christmas treats like mince pies etc.
I tried to ask my diabetes nurse if the occasional sugary treat was okay and she seemed to say no. It sounds absurd but I don't know how I'll cope over Christmas without a sugary treat here and there.
The idea of making my own low sugar treats seems impossible. Whilst I usually love baking, my energy levels throughout pregnancy have been so low I haven't even been doing my own cooking!
Does everyone actually stick to the no sugary treats rule? I don't want to cause my lil one any harm or to do anything to make labour more difficult.

I would definitely stay away from sugary things unfortunately as they will definitely set your sugars high. With my GD it was only my first morning numbers that were high but I seemed to be okay during the day. I think if you had a couple sweet treats on Christmas Day it wouldn’t be detrimental but I wouldn’t do any more than that. Try and stick to non-sugary stuff as much as you can x

I personally have had sugary treats but always pair them with something so I'll have like my healthy GD friendly meal and then will get something sweet straight after as if you eat it by itself that's when your sugars will spike

I would suggest
1- may be give yourself 1 day of Christmas and eat whatever you want to eat. Problems with GD comes when you have continuous high sugar levels and on multiple times. One day of bad levels are not going to be a problem.
2- Eat with a-lot of fibre and protein and fats so that the absorption is slow.
3- immediately have walk after your meal, it helps with regulating sugar levels in the blood.
4- Ask your friends and family to make something with artificial sweeteners or with actual fruits.
Best of luck with your pregnancy.

I had treats but paired them with protein my levels were slightly high but all was fine with baby etc you’ll work out what makes it too high over time

It would depend on your body - are you testing your sugars throughout the day? If only your fasting numbers are high, your body might tolerate an occasional treat in the afternoon without spiking but everyone is so so different. For me, it was only my fasting numbers that were high. It didnt matter what I did, they wouldn't budge. But my afternoon and evening numbers never spiked if I had a small treat occasionally during the day. I could never do sugary drinks though but a cookie wouldnt spike me. If you have a small treat in the daytime and pair it with a healthy fat or protein, check your sugars a few hours later and see how your body tolerated it. Good luck!

i think everyone is a little different, its all about limiting ur sweet treats and like others have said, pairing them with things that will keep ur sugars balanced. i dont get spikes over potatoes or pasta but heavy spikes from wholemeal bread which is odd but EVERYONE is different. so say at christmas if you wanted some terrys chocolate orange, limit urself to 3-4 slices of it and then i like to have something pickled as the vinegar seems to stabilise me

I also have a massive sweet tooth and really struggled when I had GD. For special occasions I would treat myself, making sure I also ate something high in protein and made sure I went for a walk after to help my body process it! I don’t think I’d have coped if I didn’t do that. Out of curiosity, I also tested myself after chocolatey stuff and my blood sugar never spiked higher than 7.9, but sometimes a handful of pasta salad at a BBQ would send me into the 8s 🤷🏻♀️

Everyone is different. I would start with no sweets and see how your numbers are. Then try introducing a sweet and doing something active after, like walking for at least 15 minutes or like 45 squats. These haven’t spiked my numbers but i also walk after having them and eat an appropriate portion https://www.theconsciousplantkitchen.com/pumpkin-brownie-recipe/

my fasting numbers were the problem. when i tested after i ate even if it was carbs and a brownie i was ok, you can't really control fasting sugars without medicine because it's hormonal. equally some people make sure to have a good chunk of protein and go for a walk ten minutes after eating and that lets them eat what they want. you'll just have to test throughout the day and ultimately you can always ask them to explore medication rather than diet control

I had GD over my birthday and remember asking if i could have cake on my birthday. The diabetes nurse just laughed and said its one day enjoy the cake.
Ended up my blood sugars after the cake was perfectly in range anyway 🤣
A mince pie or treat on Christmas wont hurt. As long as youre numbers are well controlled whether through diet or medication a one off treat will be fine.
Honestly, I can’t believe how we’re sometimes treated during pregnancy.
I went to my first appointment today and asked for a toxoplasmosis test because of a potential exposure (my husband cooked a half cooked venison burger 😑).
The midwife’s response? “I don’t know how it is in your country, but here we don’t routinely test for it. I’ve had a lady from France who wanted a test too because apparently that’s how they do it there.”
To which I replied, “I wouldn’t know, I’ve never been pregnant in France!” 😂 And just to clarify, I’m not even french, I’m belgian!
The whole appointment was honestly awful. I know the exact date of conception, but not the first day of my last period and my cycles are very irregular. Despite explaining all of this, I was told multiple times I was probably 9 weeks, maybe 10, when I know for a fact I’m 11 weeks.
Now I’ve been told I need to go to the Early Pregnancy Unit to confirm my dates (that I already know), because they’ve booked my first scan for after 14 weeks.
Absolute joke 😅

Out of all the people I have spoken to, all of them ended up having 3/4 day inductions that ended in c sections! It’s left me on edge about whether to have an induction if offered.

Just had a 25 week midwife appt and they measured my fundal height at 97th percentile 😳
At my 20wk scan baby was around 40% percentiles on individual measurements and only around 28% for weight. I know it’s only estimates but I was shocked as never had such a high measurement before. Even with my son in my first pregnancy I was absolutely massive and I was never that percentile for fundal height and I definitely don’t feel as big either.
I’m only short like 5ft so I always have a bigger bump anyway but just worried about it being 97th already. They said if next appt I’m measuring big I’ll get referred for a growth scan. Anyone else had or going through similar?

I’ve been cramping for about 3 days days now, they’re quite strong, don’t last too long but they’re quite far apart. Like twice a day, then 3-4 times a day. And today I’ve had 4 already. I normally get an urgent need to go to the toilet when they happen so guessed I might just have an upset stomach but that hasn’t happened today. I really don’t want to go to triage if it’s nothing

I have had my 20 week scan today. Baby was being a nightmare so they’ve had to re book to get other measurements. They couldn’t get spine (only the bottom) or the heart.
Is this something that happens often?
