My 15 month old has been hitting herself quite aggressively in the head for a few months now but it is getting worse. She does it when she’s stressed/anxious but it seems as if that is becoming more often around people she doesn’t know so well (in an elevator or small shop, if someone does an orientation at her child care, or even family that don’t see her very often) GP said it can be normal toddler behavior but I am yet to meet another mum who’s toddler also does this. Can anyone relate?

My son always does this!!!!!!! He bangs his head on the windows, in his highchair I think he does it coz it’s fun and when he does it on the walls in his room I think it’s the sound that it makes no one seems to be concerned but it does it all the time even on his door when he’s done with his nap 🙃

Sorry I just realised you said she’s hitting herself sorry. My son doesn’t hit himself just bangs it on things!

It could be a self-soothing technique for her.
My daughter sucks her fingers as a self-soothing technique. I try to give her a Teether to chomp on instead.
If it’s frustration, you could encourage her to do some big breaths..
My daughter clenches her fists when she’s frustrated, a ask her to slow down and take a big breath - I do it with her 3 times, and then offer something different to distract from what made her frustrated in the first place.
Hope this helps?
Yeh my daughter definitely does it when she’s overwhelmed as well. Also when frustrated but not as often as when she’s feeling uncomfortable. Same again with the being shy, she never used to be but it’s a coping thing when she’s shy. 100% a self soothing thing, it’s just so aggressive that it’s really hard for me to see her so distressed and feel helpless to her.
I have to admit that when she is distressed and I feel like I can’t help, it also makes me anxious so I find myself just cuddling her and saying “it’s okay, it’s okay” but explaining the situation to her is probably more useful, I will definitely try that. Glad to know she’s not the only one.
Definitely makes me uncomfortable when people see her doing it and stare, but I’ve also had numerous situations where people have laughed??? Which obviously makes it worse.
Thank you for your help!!!

My daughter turned 16 months today and I could write the exact same post.
I feel helpless when she does this
