Partner and their family!

I’m currently 33+4 and I’m having nothing but arguments with my partner about his family.

Him and his family are totally ignoring my wishes and well-being for when I’m in labour and once we have left the hospital. I made it clear from the start I wanted my partner and my mum there during the birth of our first. We had agreed that hospital visits would be our parents only and that everyone else could wait until we were home and settled - and had had some time in our own bubble with our baby! Now his family are totally taking over saying that they’ll be outside the hospital waiting to come in and meet the baby once she’s here.

My partner hasn’t supported my wishes at all, and is saying how shocked he is by my behaviour and how he thinks it’s amazing so people want to be there to support us, but right now I can’t help feeling like I’m just birthing a baby for them and that I don’t matter in the slightest?

We’ve had this same argument multiple times and this one has now ended in me having a massive panic attack. It’s just so overwhelming and I don’t feel like I’m being unreasonable or mean. My family and friends 100% understand and aren’t pushing to meet the baby and won’t be barging the door down.

Has anyone else experience this at all? Feeling very alone.

You’re allowed to decide who can and can’t be around your baby.

You can also tell the staff at the hospital that you don’t want family there.

You’re not being unreasonable or mean. It’s your baby, your body and your birth… not theirs! I haven’t experienced this but I’ve seen both on here and on social media that many other women have. You need to stand your ground (easier said than done when your partner also isn’t on side). It’s not their right to see your baby on their terms. They have to respect your wishes and it doesn’t matter if they’re upset. They need to grow up.

All the parenting and birth classes weve been to have talked about keeping the bubble small and allowing baby mum and partner to bond without the interference of everyone else- has your partner been to anything like that or read any books about it? Has he thought or know about what you will go through during labour and about the recovery period after?
He is being quite selfish, nowadays it's hardly unusual for people to say no visitors after birth

Unfortunately this is something that happens, people seem to forget that their is a person who is birthing this human and they don’t just appear out of thin air. You’re body and mind is going to have been through a lot and you have every right to tell people, no matter who they are to you, that you’d like them to wait until you are ready for visitors.

Your baby is not a toy or a prize or a shiny new thing.

I felt wildly protective of my little girl when she was born and didn’t even like people holding her. We didn’t have visitors for 2 weeks.

If people don’t respond the birthing persons wishes, it’s just outrightly wrong. No one else needs to bond with a baby apart from the parents! I cannot stress that enough. Your baby is hardwired to want you, your smell, your heartbeat, your touch.

Them being passed around is actually not what they want or need.

Tell the hospital not to let people into to see you.

Also your partner might think it’s such lovely supportive behaviour because he isn’t the one currently going through pregnancy or facing birth or postpartum.

I’m sorry but it just is not the same for him.

When he pushes out a baby, he can decide whose there. It’s the most intimate time of your life.

Your partner should be all about YOUR wishes and wants, not his families.

Sorry for the double post I just feel strongly about this and anyone who is having a baby can decide their boundaries! I just want you to know that you are doing nothing wrong.

A lot of us on here have been saying we arent even telling people we’re in labour until after baby arrives to avoid things like this! Its such a shame your partner isnt getting it though. My midwife explained it like as mammals we have the same instincts to want to hide away and give birth in a quiet, dark, SAFE space…

I’d recommend telling the hospital staff who you want and don’t want there and they won’t allow visitors for you!

Hope your partner sees sense as it’s not fair you’re made to feel like this you should be able to decide who you want there.

Yes he is correct it is lovely people want to support you but when you accept that support is your choice! I’ve said the same to my partner nobody is to visit the hospital apart from my mam and dad (my mam is my birthing partner also) and then his mam and sister after baby is born! But nobody else is to visit. Also set boundaries for when we arrive home I’ve asked for at least a week to let me get settled before friends etc come round!

Tip from my Mother, a retired midwife. You can have a quiet word with your midwife and explain the situation, they won’t let anyone else in and will happily play the bad guy and make it out like it’s their decision

I’m not telling anyone other than my parents and my partners parents when I’m in labour. It’s a shame your partner isn’t backing you on this he should be respecting your wishes and listening to what you want but I fully understand what your saying and your definitely
Not being unreasonable 🥰 x

I've put it on my birth plan and will have anyone who turns up removed - I've made this clear to everyone 😊 my partner is on my side but honestly if he wasn't I'd threaten to keep him out too.
I don't think anyone actually would turn up but even if my mum came over from her country I would not let her in.
Our baby. Our bond. Our time. We have to figure this out for the first time, together. And be mindful of how our relationship changes and i can't stand people in my face when im hurting.. I dont care how many bridges i burn, if u don't understand what im saying then ur Bridge isn't worth keeping..!!!

(Im usually very calm and easy going and like to make ppl happy but in this I'm a unmovable wall)

Ah this sounds like hard work for you!! Stupid question but have you tried sitting down with your partner and explaining what exactly is concerning you? Hopefully with a bit more understanding he might get where you’re coming from?

Since COVID more hospitals have been stricter on the number of visitors you can have after birth so worth checking the rules at your chosen hospital. It may only be your 2 birth partners allowed. I greatly welcome these rules and am not welcoming visitors to hospital. It's not hygienic and can be unfair for others in shared wards.
It's nice that everyone is so excited to meet your new baby but I think you need to speak to them to stop them getting carried away and express your wishes.

Is this clever or cruel?

My husband and i were talking and with social media and the internet in general being a terrifying dumpster fire, we are trying to figure out the best way to keep our son safe while still teaching him how to safely be online and moderation.

We landed on the idea of giving him the 90's kid treatment. A computer in the living room for us to keep an eye on what hes doing online, and once we feel hes mature enough to hang with friends without adult supervision he gets a flip phone. When we feel he is responsible enough and he earns and saves up the money for the physical phone, case, and screen cover, then we will be happy to take him to get a smart phone.

I thought this was air tight, but now my brother says its cruel to give a kid a flip phone, and besides he can just use his friends phones at school.

My husband and i remember a time before the internet, and we remember having complete access to something no one understood yet. We saw unspeakable things and are always battling with the urge to put the phone and social media down. I dont want that for my son, especially with his brain so vulnerable still.

Partner no longer wants baby #2

Before our son was born we originally both wanted minimum 2 kids but we were hoping for 3-4. My partner found the birth traumatic to watch and also struggled a lot with the newborn/baby stage. He no longer wants to have any more children and it’s completely breaking my heart. I need another baby. We’ve spoken about it a lot and the options. He said he wasn’t COMPLETELY closed off to it so I asked him to try and work through his feelings and reconsider his decision. He eventually said he definitely doesn’t want another. I know that I will always want one and my feelings will never change. Do we have to break up or does anyone know anything else I can do to help change his mind? Has anyone else’s partner said this and then changed their mind? I don’t want to break up because I adore him and our life together and I’d hate to split up our family for “selfish” reasons and make my son miss out on having both of us together but I just don’t know what to do

Nursery funding

My child turned 9 months last week. I applied for government funded hours nearly 2 months ago and so well within the required timeframe for the April term, however upon receiving my first invoice without the funding applied and having questioned this, I have now been informed that the stretched funding doesn’t start until 4th May.

Has anyone else been told it won’t start until May?

The government site states it should start from April 1st, and so I intentionally set my nursery start and return to work as the start of April for that reason, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to afford the nursery on my sole income without the funding

Jealous of my husband

I’m so jealous of him and it’s making me resentful. We have a ten week old and I’m jealous that he is at work all day. I’m jealous he can leave for lunch and actually eat an uninterrupted lunch. Take a phone call uninterrupted. Chat with a friend he runs in to uninterrupted. Even go to the bathroom when he wants uninterrupted. He comes home from work when he wants. He’s not on a set schedule. Some days are late some are early. It depends on when he’s done. I’m jealous he can come home at 10pm and shower, eat and go right to bed uninterrupted because I already have the baby asleep. He doesn’t have to worry about anything house wise or baby wise because I’ve done it all. Meanwhile I’m covered in puke and crap and smell like rotten milk. When he is home he is VERY active and helpful. So it’s not that. I’m just jealous his world hasn’t changed and mine has I guess. This isn’t something he’s doing wrong so I’m not sure how to get past this. I wish I could keep him home all day because that’s how helpful he is, but I understand he obv needs to work.

Calpol

My mum has just given my 4 year old calpol because he asked for it. He isn’t poorly (although was last week, been fine this week) he just likes the taste of it. My mum didn’t check, didn’t ask, just gave it to him and when I’ve questioned her she said “he asked for it”. Then quizzed 4 year old who said he asked for it because it tastes nice.

How would you react?
