We have had quite some issues with the sleep of our little daughter but after a long journey of establishing a routine, being almost paranoid about wake windows and building up sleep pressure we thought we had it more or less resolved. 8 month old now and she has 2 naps per day with very little help and sleeps at the same time at night with us putting her to bed and staying around in the dark until she is asleep. All this until earlier this week… after more than one month that she is doing absolutely fine with falling asleep by herself at night, she suddenly started screaming after I put her to bed and turned off the light. Even if my intervention was immediate, she kept screaming for almost 20 minutes while both my and my husband were trying to soothe her. Finally after a while she fell asleep exhausted in my arms. 3 days passed by with everything normal until tonight when she woke up screaming 10 minutes after she fell asleep by herself. Thankfully this time it did not escalate and I managed to put her back to bed after rocking her for some minutes but I am worried this will get worse. After spending almost 2 months with a horrible 4 month regression I am terrified of having to go through this again. Any ideas of why this might be happening ? Thanks in advance for all comments!

Hey, I have read there's an 8 month sleep regression as well, but shouldn't be as bad as the one at 4 months.

First of all you are doing great. You got this and don’t stress a stressed mum makes a stressed Bub. my boy is 9 months old and we feed him to sleep up until a few weeks ago he was breastfed and it was the only way he would sleep now he does the same just with a bottle. I have no advice except your doing a great job

thank you so much, really appreciate it 😊

heard that as well. However she is doing really great during naps and overall once she is asleep so that is why I am not sure it is a regression. I am more afraid of separation anxiety or anything else I am not aware of 🙈 so complicated!

When my son was doing this around this age it was related to what we were feeding him, he was in pain and really needed to pass gas or poop and it didn’t hurt until he was laying down

thanks for sharing! I will definitely keep an eye on this although before the sleep we only give to her milk and she does not seem to have the same issue for day naps which happen after the solids. But you never know ! Thank you !

@Thaleia my daughter is just about 8 months old and some nights she will randomly start crying after she has already been asleep for a while. I usually just give her a soother because she doesn't seem like she is actually fully awake when she does it.
I thought maybe she had another tooth coming in but I keep checking and I don't see anything.
I am thinking maybe something to do with separation? She naps pretty good, but sometimes when I put her down, if I walk out of the room to let her settle, she will start crying until I stand beside the crib. Once she is asleep, she is fine, and when she wakes up, she is happy.

I guess we are having more or less the same problem ! Happy baby in general with good naps that randomly cries. Ours already has 2 teeth and we checked for new ones but she does not seem to have anything about to pop yet. Also when she was having the first ones she was grumpy the whole day which is not the case now. I also thought it might be related to separation anxiety. In our case we always stay in the room until she is fully asleep but maybe some nights she still needs to see us to be reassured… I just want to exclude that something more urgent is happening that needs attention or medical advise and it is quite reassuring to see it is happening with more babies of the same age range. I am sad that this is happening to her and she is suffering but it is on the other hand a sign of development if that is the case so we can only support them ! Thanks so much !!

@Thaleia same with our daughter, she has two bottom teeth so far and she was pretty grumpy too for those few days. I find she only does it when it's nap time, because at night, I can place her down, and I usually sit behind a chair in our room till she falls asleep and she usually does it on her own. But the random cries through the night are confusing and they freak me out because it's like from 0-100 in a few seconds and I wake up in a panic lol.

screams during the sleep (long after they are asleep for the night) are really scary for us but usually it is ok for them. I have asked the paediatrician because she did that a couple of times when she was around 2 months old and I thought she was dying or something but the doctor reassured us that it is quite usual and it has mostly to do with their digestion. In our case when this was happening back then she was not awake at all, but once I took her in my arms because I was afraid and then she woke up and did not like it at all 🙈

Each sleep regression is bc they’re learning something new. To combat that, give them ample day time to learn that new something (at 4 months it’s rolling). Not sure what 8 months new skill is but maybe that’s it?

Hi thanks for your input! 8 months is full of new skills! Trying to stand, many new vocal sounds etc. This is all she does all day long 😂 In the meantime this has not happened again, hopefully it won’t also in the future
