Hi everyone! I've been kinda struggling for the past 6 months after my daughter's routine doctors visit where they gave me the MCHAT and based on the score they reffered us to development evalution and determined that she has a speech delay. I took her back after she turned and did the MCHAT again, this time she checked everything exept for the fact that she doesn't point with one finger at something she wants and the doctor told me that puts her at medium risk for autism. Not only that but she also wrote that my daughter has sensory integration disorder based solely on the fact that she's kind of a picky eater. Now all this seems to me like a normal two year old developing at her own pace and she may be behind in certain areas but I think the reason could be explained by our situation, we're a bilingual household and don't have any family here so she spends all of her time with me and I don't really know what I'm doing. Anyways, does anybody have a similar experience or advice?

Don’t have a ton of advice, but from what I’m reading I wouldn’t put too much weight on what her dr says at this time; like you, it sounds like normal 2yr old behavior! My son is 6yrs old and is sensitive to sounds and still a picky eater (either it’s a texture thing or just plain being picky) but his dr has never pegged it as a sensory disorder. I’m sure you’re doing a great job with your little one, give yourself credit! Maybe practice with her when she does point at something to make her hand/fingers into just one finger when pointing. It just takes repetition/practice!

I worry about things like this with my tiny person. Apparently she’s supposed to learn to wave soon. Who the hell waves? And who points?
It’s possible I’m a weirdo, who will raise a weirdo baby. And it’s also possible these are stupid tests.
thank you so much! Makes me feel a lot better🩷
you make some good points😂 thank you

A lot of these milestones are just based on averages and your daughter might be developing at her own pace.
I wouldn’t stress too much about it, but I do think you should incorporate some exercises into your play time. Just like some other folks have recommended, teach her how to point, show it, repeat multiple times etc.
I was worried that my daughter wasn’t turning on time while her peers were already getting from their back to stomach easily. I had to show it to her a couple times and she started doing it within a few days. I was expecting that she’d do this on her own (I’m sure some kids do, maybe?) but my kid just didn’t even know it was a thing until I showed it to her. So I started looking stuff up online re: helpful exercises with babies for my daughter’s age and what milestones we’re supposed to be hitting and I incorporate some of it into our routine play time now.
Trust me, nobody knows what they’re doing 🙂 but there’s a ton of info online that can help. Good luck!
