My son started eating at 5 months old, he is almost 8 months old and decided he don’t want to eat anymore! There is nothing I can do to change his mind, he went from eating EVERYTHING, to eating NOTHING! Won’t even put anything in his mouth!
This only started a few days ago and has gradually gotten worse to the point he won’t even have his favourite items anymore! I have been persistently trying to keep his routine of breakfast and dinner with a snack in between as usual but he is turning everything down!
He has been more clingy, night sleep has been hit or miss with him waking screaming every hr some nights, hard to settle some days (most days) and just not the same! He is not sick as he is otherwise himself but he has gone back to being EBF now!
I don’t see anyone else mention this for their teething babies at all which makes me wonder if it is teething that has thrown him off but I don’t know what else it can be! He has no teeth at all, doesn’t seem to have any sign of them either but just refuses anything going in his mouth besides teething powder, his fingers or him biting us🤔.
Is this down to teething? Will he go back to eating once they break through? Could it be something else?

My baby is 4months and 3weeks
She barely takes breast milk, wants real food

First talk to pediatrician. Second try stuff for teething like frozen l/chilled etc and I heard celery works maybe refrigerate it and try 🤷🏻♀️ I haven’t heard of them stopping eating all together before just more fussy etc

Yeah he has stopped eating everything now, he use to eat toast with different toppings or different pancakes for breakfast and won’t touch it now! He LOVES pasta which he refuses to touch now. He would always try new stuff but he will instantly turn his head to everything now! He will just about put his teether in his mouth now, I can try and give him some celery but he refuses to bring anything to his mouth now! A few days ago he had an ice lolly but I can’t imagine he will try that again. He also drinks a lot of water which he barely touches now!
The only thing he hasn’t stopped is breastfeeding so I’m still feeding him on demand but that’s the only thing keeping him going now! It will be highly unlikely I can get a dr to see him soon too

Oh if he's still nursing it can definitely be teething. The way your nipple fits in his mouth actually hits a spot that relieves pain so they often will want to nurse way more. I'd offer some pain relief if you can and definitely try cold foods. As he's 8 months he doesn't need food for his nutrition just yet so it's okay for them to just be purely milk babies again for a few days while they feel sick or in pain ♥️

it’s really weird because in the night when he randomly starts screaming and I try and put my boob in his mouth like usual he with push his head back and refuse the nipple, then I will either have to fight with him or switch to the other boob and try again and he eventually takes it again! Before he would instantly latch on but not so much anymore, I would never of guessed it’s a pain reliever! I haven’t given him any pain killers because it seems really random and some days seems he will need pain killers 24/7 then other days he is fine.. just trying to figure out when he needs them is hard!
I know he does need food until a year but he was such a big foodie to not eating anything and my biggest concern is that this setback can make him fussy to eat anything again once the teething is over which is why I’m still offering him his usual foods to give him a chance and keep him interested.

It’s very common at 8-11 months of age for babies to go through a period of going off weaning and refusing to eat. We are jsut out the other side of those with my little girl , it was a stressful couple of weeks.
I kept offering food, never put pressure on it and it’s just happened again that she wants to it. I wouldn’t worry, easier said than done I know, but they will go through phases!

oh ok so in your case it wasn’t related to teething? And 8-11 months seems a long time to not want food! He is 9 days away from 8 months but this could be what is happening🤔

I think she has the odd day, but I don’t think it was related for the whole 2 weeks.
So it’s usually a 10 day-14 day period within that 8-11 month age bracket, not the whole time!

I’d contact your health visitor for advice

ooh okay that makes sense
my health visitor was really terrible when she was around, she left when he was about 2-3 months and said I will see her again around 1 year and tbh I’m dreading seeing her again she was that bad!

I’d say if it goes on longer than 2 weeks, speak to someone. But it’s so common and it won’t be the first time little one refuses food. Every toddler goes through stages of refusing all food 🤣🤣
Obviously always keep an eye on other signs that might show baby is in pain when eating etc but if you keep mealtimes calm and relaxed, it should go back to normal

we are not even at toddler stage yet and it already starting😭. We have had some progress today, he had hospital today and had a crap night sleep last night so skipped breakfast but when we came home I got him to eat some of my lunch and a baby snack so I’m hoping he is starting to go back to normal now🤞 still a tiny amount of food for him but still progress😮💨
