How to stop feeding to sleep?!

My baby is EBF and basically at night i feed him to sleep, and through the night he just will not go back to sleep until I feed him. Ive tried rocking him, stroking him, patting his bum etc etc and he is not having it he just screams. I don't like the idea of the "cry it out" method. Just wondering what other breastfeeding mums do or whether we really are all whacking a boob out every time?!

If it works, why try anything different?

I am in the same boat, but it was the same with my 6 year old who also exclusively breast fed. It does get easier

How old?

My daughter is 18 months and feeds to sleep and latches several times during the night. It can be exhausting but it's very much biologically normal

My 6 month old is the same, if we're home it's feeding to nap too, I've just accepted it and trust it will work itself out, one day I'll miss it, as much as I would love to sleep more and have some time away to myself at nap times it is what it is I guess, I think a lot of it is comfort too, My daughter will not use a dummy so I guess she uses me as one šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

My 13 weeks old is the same and he is on formula .He wakes up multiple times overnight and wants me to feed him, cuddle him etc. They just looking for the safe place sorry to say but it is totally normal and will last for a while.

Similar to what others have put, LG is EBF never took a bottle, and woke multiple times a night until a couple of months ago. I see you mentioned that you think he’s not actually hungry when he wakes. That’s the same as me, my LG wasn’t. I did reduced feeds in the end, there’s lots of guidance online, but basically you pick one feed time to ā€˜drop’ first. Time how long you feed normally. Then on the next night you want to drop the feed length by 1 minute. Stay the same the following night. Then reduce further the night after etc. (e.g. normal feed 8 mins. Night 1&2: feed for 7 mins. Night 3&4: feed for 6 mins, and so on)
Eventually it’ll drop to such short feeds that if baby is just waking out of habit they will basically learn it’s not worth waking for a couple of minutes of boob, then they will drop that wake. Then you can repeat the process to drop the others. Obviously as others have stated, only do this if they’re old enough to not need feeding through the night…

/don’t have weight gain issues.

The above worked well for us and LG now sleeps through 90% of the time and has done since about 16 months old. Before we dropped the feeds she was waking about 3 times a night on average.

Also helps if your little one takes a dummy? As I found when I was reducing the feed times, I could pop her off the boob and pop the dummy in its place to keep her settled long enough to transfer back to her cot.

Hope this helps. Feel free to message me if you want more info on how I did it, if you think it’ll be a good fit for you.

You got this! You’re just his best comfort at the moment 🄰x

My girl isn't nursed but bottle fed with expressed milk and will feed while still asleep. Shes only 4months so dont expect that to change soon. Its comfort and its also she could just be hungy. Its completely normal for babies.

My 15 month old still breastfeeds multiple times through the night. When I night weaned my first, around 20 months old, he cried the first few nights of me not offering a feed. He got used to it. Lots of cuddles helped. It’s so tough x

Feeding to sleep became unsustainable for me - like you said it was all on me to get her back down multiple times a night and it was having real impact on my sleep and mental health. The first thing we did was try to break the association, which meant feeding half an hour before naps or bedtime and making sure they don’t fall asleep whilst feeding. Then it was about getting her to go to sleep in her cot. We did our usual bedtime routine and then would place her awake in the cot, put a hand on her tummy/chest and gently rock her in the cot whilst shushing. I was skeptical but this worked really well for us! Once she was comfortable with this method of going to sleep we gradually moved towards getting her to go to sleep independently, so going from rocking for a little bit to just a hand on her, to just shushing whilst next to the cot, to shushing away from the cot, to eventually putting her down and leaving the room, coming back in if she cried. Now she goes to sleep independently (1/2)

(2/2) for all naps and bedtime, no crying. It saved my sanity and we all sleep much better. Yes, feeding to sleep is normal and if it works then great, but if you need to make a change for your mental health then that’s fine too! Good luck, I hope it goes well for you!

What do you really need for breastfeeding?

I’m looking up and getting ads for a million things, and it’s hard to know what women ACTUALLY USE while breastfeeding and what is just useless crap. I’ve heard nipple cream/butter is a great help, but I have no clue. Let me know what you all love and use.

Self love

Before this is read wrong, I love being pregnant and love being my baby girls home 🄰 but anybody else struggling with loving their new self, growing my little girl has been one of the best experiences ever but also came with a big challenge that I never expected to face.

Learning to love a new version of myself has become the hardest part of pregnancy for me personally and think it’s one of the challenges nobody ever talks about which I get why, when I tell people about it and the struggle I’m facing many of times I’m faced with a response of ā€œbe grateful your having a babyā€ whilst I am extremely grateful I am also adjusting to a new version that I have no control over.

Whilst I maybe uncomfortable with the way I am now, knowing that I’m her safe space and her first home will always bring me comfort.

I think my marriage is past the point of saviour.

Hey everyone.

Sorry for the long read but please bare with me.

My husband and I have been together 7.5 years and married for 4 years. We have a nearly 5 year old little boy together.

Everything at the beginning of our relationship was everything I had ever wanted in a relationship. My husband was kind, caring, helpful, ambitious, strong etc. We both spoke about the want for our own family and how we would want to be as parents. Moving forward we got pregnant (planned), pregnancy wasn't easy and I was in and out of hospital a lot during 3rd trimester. My husband was perfect and excited etc throughout pregnancy until the 3rd trimester hit and then went of the rails a bit, drinking etc and not really there when needed.

I had experience with children and helped raised my neices, my husband had no experience. Neither of us had a good upbringing.

Roll on birth and my husband had a face like a slapped bum, our little boy was born absolutely perfect. I was really poorly and lost quite a lot of blood and was being sick. I had the shakes so bad I was struggling to hold my son. My husband left me before I was even moved to the ward whilst being unwell. He left me to go meet his dad at the pub to wet the babies head.

After we were discharged home my husband just took a back seat with everything. I done everything for our son all whilst recovering from a cseaction. My son was a poorly baby and I was also back and forth to Dr's and hospital with him on my own. My husband got a job where it was very long hours and having to stay away a few times a week for work. I was keeping the house, doing everything for our son and keeping everything together with no village. Roll on my son's like 3 weeks old and my husband says he feels nothing for our son. Shortly after this he has a massive breakdown. I supported him through all of this, took him to appointments whilst doing everything for my son who was still poorly.

For 1.5 years I done everything for my son and for everyone else and kept everything together.

Roll on to nearly 4 years later (sons nearly 5) and turns out my son is neurodivergent, has a eating disorder, now has a PEG fitted, has ketotic hyperglycemia, asthma and allergies. I'm dealing with this day in day out all whilst dealing with my own chronic health conditions.

My husband tries but he just shouts at our son a lot and gets frustrated. I feel like we just butt heads and I end up having to defend our child. He still trys to be sexual and kiss etc but I have no desire at all and even him just touching me just makes me want to pull away.

I feel like he hurt me more than anyone or anything possible. He ruined what was meant to the best time of our lives and ruined my whole experience entering motherhood and I just can't get past that. I've spoken to him and told him all this. He keeps saying he's sorry and he will change but it's just empty promises. He's not the man I feel in love with and he's not the father he was meant to be or that I want for our child.

Any advice please?

When did your toddler stop napping?

My 2.5 year old is fussing and fighting everytime I take her for her nap recently. I persist and then she sleeps for nearly 2 hours.

Normally, she would then go to bed at 8pm, take about 30 mins and then fall asleep. However, recently she will be laying in bed from 8-10pm with her eyes open like not sleeping at all.

Is she ready to drop her nap? Or is it likely to be something else

How do you teach your baby to self settle without letting them cry it out?
