What do you really need for breastfeeding?

I’m looking up and getting ads for a million things, and it’s hard to know what women ACTUALLY USE while breastfeeding and what is just useless crap. I’ve heard nipple cream/butter is a great help, but I have no clue. Let me know what you all love and use.

Burtsbees healing cream is what I use. The boppypillow was hard for me so I use regular pillows instead

Honestly the only thing Ive used is the bamboo reusable breast pads! Got nipple balm but ive never had dry ir cracked nipples from breastfeeding so never bothered to use it! Didn't get a breastfeeding pillow either. I just use a spare bed pillow and have that under baby to support her while im feeding.

The only 2 things id recommend are reusable (bamboo) breast pads and a breastfeeding bra (those ones you can easily clip up and down)

Muslins and cotton cloths of various measurements to catch milk, clean baby, spit, etc. I used coconut oil on nipples the first few days when they were sore, I have nursing bras and a nursing top I can wear that make breastfeeding easy, and lastly a big cotton scarf I can tie around my neck to cover when breastfeeding in public. All these things are also useful for other purposes, so it's nice and versatile and you are not wasting money on single use things :)

I thought I needed the butter during pregnancy bc the pain etc and actually breastfeeding I never used it.

Needed pump parts bc i was working (spectra was best for a wall pump and I had elvie for on the job). And the milk bags for storage.

Also needed breastfeeding friendly clothing. Never felt like I needed a blanket or those cover ups.

Ceres chill was handy for work cuz I didn't have fridge access.

I didn't feel like I needed the boppy pillow. Or silveretts. Or anything else really. Hakkaa was useful sometimes.

This time I'm hoping to mainly breastfeed instead of pumping. Should be a lot easier.

Need? A boob!
Best investment for me was a feeding chair, you're going to be sat in it ALOT. Other things are nursing bras and suitable clothing - I like feeding tops but baggy normal clothing does the job
I've had 2 babies, one EBF to 16months and the other 7months and still going strong. The only other thing is if you want to bottle feed as then it opens up needing pump, sterilising, bottles, milk bags. If things are uncomfy to the extent of needing cracked nipple cream then the latch isn't right and support on fixing that is needed.
And do some research in advance, be prepared for what to expect! Good luck!

I would try to get a nipple shield to have handy in the hospital just in case you need one. They have them at the hospital but the ones they had didn’t really work for me and it set me back for breastfeeding a lot until I found the ones that worked for me. Pads are a must so you’re not constantly leaking in your bra. I also liked to use the collection cups because they collected milk that could of gone to waste. There are a lot of factors depending on how your breastfeeding journey goes. To prep for the hospital I would focus on immediate items like the nipple cream possibly the shields, and a pump even if you want to exclusively breastfeed a pump is very helpful even just to stimulate milk production. And as you go along see what you need or what could help you.

I've loved my breastfeeding pillow, that definitely helped for me. Plus nipple cream and reusable breastpads (comfier than disposable in my opinion). And plenty of muslins, and nursing bras ☺️

haaka or i’ve heard of a different brand too! nipple cream for if they’re dry, breast pads (i barely use them), nursing bras (i also never use them bc i never wear a bra lol. on my third baby EBF 🥳

This is my first and only baby I am BF, but for me nipple cream was useful and silver nipple caps because baby and I struggled with a good latch in the beginning.

And reusable pads, as I am discovering the disposable ones leave my nipples feeling itchy and red.

I personally don't like the nursing bras so I got this, I just pull the cup down and there's no issue I like the support it gives me, as I'm a D cup not engorged. When I fo get engorged they stretch wonderfully

I’ve had 3 babies in 4 years 😅 breasted them all (still breastfeeding my youngest) for 1yr+ and these are the 3 things i used/use:

-Breast-feeding bras, lanolin nipple cream (only really used in the first few months when nipples were the most sore) and I swear by a manual suction pump! I highly recommend getting one that just sits inside of your bra. I’ve built all of my freezer supplies just off of my let down from the breast I wasn’t nursing on.

This is my first baby and we’re EBF - honestly don’t get anything! See how you get along and buy when needed everything is next day delivery anyway

I would say the suggestions for breastfeeding friendly clothes/ bra and a nursing cover are useful! But also at the start you may just be at home so may not even need them either! And I just checked my closet when I started going out again and only wear things I can breast feed in

Everything else just buy IF needed! And you may not need🤷🏻‍♀️

Wild carrot calendula nipple whip was my favorite!! I even used it on my lips when I stopped nursing.

Comfortable shirts to be able to breast feed in.

A Hakaa, very hot water and epsom salt in case you get a clogged milk duct. Kinda hurts but it works!

You got this mama! 🤍

Team disposable nursing pads here. The reusable ones make you smell like a bread factory 😂 tried to be better for the environment, but they got so gross!!

I highly recommend stocking up on sunflower lecithin and a probiotic to help prevent any clogged ducts.

Silverettes are good to have on hand, but not necessary. Any basic nipple balm is just fine - no need to spend an arm and a leg.

The answer changes a bunch if you plan to pump, too

Know that your breasts are tap not a milk bank, Access to nutritionally dense food, warm foods, lots of water, no stress, safe space, an idc attitude, & discernment for all the advice you'll get from eveyone

Silverettes, nursing pillow, and cooling nipple gel pads. I tried the nipple creams they give at the hospital but the Silverettes alone worked perfect, never had cracked nipples

Any mamas in this situation? Doc says she needs formula

Breastfed since one month old. Born (4lbs 11oz) At her two month check with my midwives they said she was doing really well with weight gain (6lbs 5oz). Now at 3 months we went to our family doctor and she is at 7lbs 6.4oz.

My doctor is concerned about weight gain but also said she’s doing great with holding her head, being attentive, etc. Dr. Said I should give formula

But what I don’t understand is my daughter always seems satisfied with feeding and doesn’t cry or fuss after. Anyone have a similar situation?

When do your children go to bed?

I just saw a post about people being lucky their kids go to bed at 7pm, the comments were filled with people saying if they sent their kids to bed at 7…they’d be up at 3:30am / 4am / 5am…why is that??

My son goes to bed at 7pm and wakes up around 8/8:30am. I do consider myself really blessed with his sleep schedule however he doesn’t nap and he’s nearly 2 🤣 he dropped his final nap when he was around 14/15 months old 💔 if it’s later please let me know! Also what time they wake up - I’m curious 👀

How are we weaning from bottles to sippy cups??

My daughter will be 1.5 in December and her pediatrician recommended sippy cups instead of bottles, the only issue is I don’t think my daughter is getting the concept. She refuses to hold it on her own and just won’t drink from it even when I’m holding it. What tips and tricks worked for you?

I think my marriage is past the point of saviour.

Hey everyone.

Sorry for the long read but please bare with me.

My husband and I have been together 7.5 years and married for 4 years. We have a nearly 5 year old little boy together.

Everything at the beginning of our relationship was everything I had ever wanted in a relationship. My husband was kind, caring, helpful, ambitious, strong etc. We both spoke about the want for our own family and how we would want to be as parents. Moving forward we got pregnant (planned), pregnancy wasn't easy and I was in and out of hospital a lot during 3rd trimester. My husband was perfect and excited etc throughout pregnancy until the 3rd trimester hit and then went of the rails a bit, drinking etc and not really there when needed.

I had experience with children and helped raised my neices, my husband had no experience. Neither of us had a good upbringing.

Roll on birth and my husband had a face like a slapped bum, our little boy was born absolutely perfect. I was really poorly and lost quite a lot of blood and was being sick. I had the shakes so bad I was struggling to hold my son. My husband left me before I was even moved to the ward whilst being unwell. He left me to go meet his dad at the pub to wet the babies head.

After we were discharged home my husband just took a back seat with everything. I done everything for our son all whilst recovering from a cseaction. My son was a poorly baby and I was also back and forth to Dr's and hospital with him on my own. My husband got a job where it was very long hours and having to stay away a few times a week for work. I was keeping the house, doing everything for our son and keeping everything together with no village. Roll on my son's like 3 weeks old and my husband says he feels nothing for our son. Shortly after this he has a massive breakdown. I supported him through all of this, took him to appointments whilst doing everything for my son who was still poorly.

For 1.5 years I done everything for my son and for everyone else and kept everything together.

Roll on to nearly 4 years later (sons nearly 5) and turns out my son is neurodivergent, has a eating disorder, now has a PEG fitted, has ketotic hyperglycemia, asthma and allergies. I'm dealing with this day in day out all whilst dealing with my own chronic health conditions.

My husband tries but he just shouts at our son a lot and gets frustrated. I feel like we just butt heads and I end up having to defend our child. He still trys to be sexual and kiss etc but I have no desire at all and even him just touching me just makes me want to pull away.

I feel like he hurt me more than anyone or anything possible. He ruined what was meant to the best time of our lives and ruined my whole experience entering motherhood and I just can't get past that. I've spoken to him and told him all this. He keeps saying he's sorry and he will change but it's just empty promises. He's not the man I feel in love with and he's not the father he was meant to be or that I want for our child.

Any advice please?

Self love

Before this is read wrong, I love being pregnant and love being my baby girls home 🥰 but anybody else struggling with loving their new self, growing my little girl has been one of the best experiences ever but also came with a big challenge that I never expected to face.

Learning to love a new version of myself has become the hardest part of pregnancy for me personally and think it’s one of the challenges nobody ever talks about which I get why, when I tell people about it and the struggle I’m facing many of times I’m faced with a response of “be grateful your having a baby” whilst I am extremely grateful I am also adjusting to a new version that I have no control over.

Whilst I maybe uncomfortable with the way I am now, knowing that I’m her safe space and her first home will always bring me comfort.
