Does it bother you when people without children, or children younger than yours, say babies, give you parenting advice?

My brother with 1 baby age 8 months gave me some potty training tips for my 2 year old when I said we were about to start.

Don’t get wrong, I would say “I read xyz..” and share information that way.

Yeah dont give me any parenting advice if you havent been there before, if you have no kids and if I didnt ask you lol

If they're being friendly/nice about it, it doesn't annoy me. If they're being 'know it all' about it, then it does.

I've had people give me shit advice before when they've been in the same situation or already gone through it, I've had people give me really good advice before when they haven't been 🤷🏻‍♀️

Avatar

No, I tend to find parents are biased by what worked for their own child and people without kids are commenting from a broader perspective which can sometimes be more helpful.

Avatar

I don’t like unsolicited parenting advice anyways unless it comes from a professional. Like if I’ve not asked you just keep it to yourself 😂

Avatar

Not really, I’ll take advice from anyone as long as it’s meant with good intent. I don’t take things like this to heart.

Avatar

Not exactly. I give parenting advice to people with older kids or probably did a few when I didn’t have kids. I’m the oldest or 5 kids so i’ve already gone through or seen a lot of parenting stuff from my family that I know some ways to handle things. So I’ll share it if it seems necessary. So if someone gives me information. Then I’ll take that and think about it and maybe use it. If I know that they are an older siblings of multiple them it’ll make more sense. But if it’s some sort of Karen who had no kids and who’s like an older siblings or hasn’t had to raise anyone in a very very very long time then I might just take that advice and shove it in a trash can.

Outside perspectives are often helpful in my experience. I just imagine what they mean to say is "easier said than done", but that doesn't mean their advice is invalid

I’ve given parenting advice to a friend with older kids plenty of times, and now that my child is the same age they were at the time, I still stand by that advice and it’s worked for me when I’ve been in the same situations. Sometimes I find myself in a situation I’ve given advice for, and try to think back to what I told my friend and then implement my own advice and it works🤷🏼‍♀️
You don’t have to have experienced something to have knowledge or insight on it, and often those who have experienced it give bad advice anyways.
That same friend with older kids gave me plenty of advice and 90% of it was bad

Avatar

Advice is advice so long as it's not rude. You can take it or not or just ignore it.

Avatar

It depends how they give it tbh.
I do get bothered when they make judgements and dumb af comments about scenarios they have not lived through though. #stillsalty

Avatar

It doesn’t bother me. However it’s unlikely I would ever ask someone for parenting advice in the first place and it’s even more unlikely I’d be asking advice of someone who hasn’t been through the stages I have

Avatar

I mean, as a teacher I would guess that some things I’ve said to parents may fall under the general umbrella of “parenting advice,” and my own kids are still younger than the kids I teach. Depends on context, expertise in the area, motivation behind giving the advice.

Avatar

Unsolicited advice are never ok to me... Yet if I'm looking for an advice I might ask to someone who I think is qualified and with no children. I personally wouldn't ask for advice from lots of moms I know because we have totally different parenting styles and I don't value their opinions. Yet I value opinions of other moms I know and also other friends who have no kids yet

Avatar

Eh, it depends. I know people that just cant not give ‘advice’ about every single thing. It’s exhausting. But once in a while? Yeah I don’t mind.

Would this upset you?

My boyfriend told me tonight that he thinks his life has gone down hill since 25. He’s 29 currently, we’ve known each other for 11 years but only got together 3 years ago when he was 26, our daughter was born in December when he was 28.

Today was my 25th birthday, long story short it was an awful day. Only my mom and my sister acknowledged it was my birthday, I couldn't leave the house because my car is currently broken and my boyfriend is prepping for harvest so he wasn't home until really late.

He asked me how it felt to be 25 and I said it was okay, he said “good, because it only goes downhill from here” so I said “do you really think your life has gone down hill since you were 25” because I thought it must have been a joke.

But no he was dead serious, he then explained to me that not just 25 he thinks his life has gotten worse since he was 23. Which honestly hurt because we got together and our amazing daughter being born has happened since his life ‘got worse’.

Am i being unreasonable

Am i being unreasonable? My partner has a cold, and didnt work yesterday, so i expected him to help with the baby so i could have an hour or two off (this was after he slept in till 1pm) he thinks that as hes the one who is ill i shouldnt be doing less than what i would on a normal day when hes at work so i shouldnt ask him to help, which i said i would be okay with if thats the same for when im ill, that i get to do nothing and rest, which is obviously not going to be the case and he basically said as much

He also believes if hes too ill to work hes too ill to look after the baby, which i dont agree with because she has to be looked after regardless if one or both of us is ill

If it was a serious illness it would be different, but its a cold

Please be honest if you think im unreasonable because i am on my period so maybe im over reacting a bit but just want advice

Would nursery tell you if your baby isn’t doing well at nursery?

My baby has been going to nursery for two months now. She is so upset when I drop her off , she barely sleeping there and she seem like a shell of herself when we pick her up.

When we are off work and spend the day with her she is so happy all day.

I just wonder the nursery teachers says she has settled in really well. But I’m just unsure because in the end the nursery is a business and they make money of us.
So I feel unsure if they would be honest with us, if they thought the nursery isn’t suitable for my bby.

Has anyone got experience where the nursery told you it wasn’t working and the baby is un happy ? Or did you go on your own gut feeling?

Thank you

Just a vent

I hate to admit but I’m really struggling with my 11 month old little boy at the moment 😓
Everything seems to be a problem in his eyes, take something away he shouldn’t be playing with? Screams and throws a tantrum. Nappy change? Absolute carnage. Sleeping through the night? I wish, he has me up every 2 hours it feels like and we co sleep just to save my sanity. He wants to be held but also hates being restricted. It’s like I can never keep him happy for more than 5 minutes 🥲
His dad also works nights so I get no help really except on a weekend and even then it’s minimal.
I love him to death and when he’s happy and chatty it’s the most precious feeling but he is just so cranky and I find myself losing patience with him at times which of course turns into massive guilt.
I just needed to get it off my chest and see if anyone else resonates with this stage 😓🥲

I hate my nanny’s fiancé.

We love our nanny. She has been with us since our 3 year old was 1. He knows no other caregivers besides us and her and he gets so much out of their time together. I trust her to keep him safe and keep him developmentally engaged while maintaining our preferred methods for discipline and structure.
However I HATE her fiancé. I get that they’re young; both 21 so I’ve excused some of his behavior such as the arrogance. The fiancé comes with us on trips so the nanny can come on the trips to work without them being separated for extended periods of time or for her to have to be alone and he pays for himself but sometimes he comes to work with her and is around our child. My husband can’t stand him either. We were previously considering hiring her as a live-in on another house on our multi-acre property we love her so much.
What I don’t like about him is primarily his politics. It wouldn’t bother me as much but he’s very close-minded and I don’t want our kids to like him while he preaches this rhetoric.
Some red flags have been that he doesn’t believe in evolution. It took the nanny a year to convince him that billionaires are unethical and shouldn’t exist. He’s a staunch Christian conservative and we as a family are open to all religions and have people of multiple religions within our family. We do not believe in pushing any one religion upon our children. This may sound like I’m against his beliefs and I guess that in some ways I am because of how much religion becomes intertwined with issues like politics and education. My best friend lost her father to COVID because they were anti-vax. Her father flat out told me at his granddaughter’s birthday party that people should stop listening to science and start listening to the bible shortly before he passed which was even more unsettling considering he was a public school teacher. Our family DOES believe in science which is probably why the fiancés anti-evolution comment bothered me so much.
We would prefer a live-in nanny now that I’m expecting and for them to be able to move and travel with us but I’d hate for my oldest to lose the relationship he has with our current nanny or to fire her because of what her partner said. She herself has done nothing wrong and I have no problems with her being Christian too since she still believes in science, is more left-leaning, and she doesn’t push her religion to our son.
Even though I’d hate to do it should I replace the nanny?
Do I have a right to be this bothered by the fiancé or am I overreacting?
