Weaning at 5 months

I have started weaning at 5 months. It’s only been a few days and I’ve just given a small amount of baby rice mixed with breast milk once a day. Any advice on what else I can give before 6 months? And how should I start increasing it? Should I start with a larger portion or go to 2 portions on week 2?

It doesn’t need to be increased anytime soon.
Guidance is a couple of teaspoons once a day once baby is 6 months old - gradually increasing to a ‘meal’, around 8 months old introduce a second meal and then a third by 10 months

There’s no real nutritional value to baby rice and not really much taste so I’d look at blitzing some veg with breast milk. You can make a bunch then freeze the extra in little pots/ice cube trays. As you’ve started early I would keep the amount really small once a day because it’s not really recommended until 6 months so I’d keep it simple. There’s no rush to increase volume weaning is just about learning to eat, different tastes and textures and introducing allergens

As Rachel said there is no nutritional value to baby rice- it is essentially just a thickener. I wouldn’t increase until after 6 months but you could begin with vegetable purées for different tastes- give one veg per day and repeat the same veg multiple times- remember an allergy doesn’t always show up on the first eating. You can batch cook the purées and freeze them and then add a small amount of breast milk when you defrost them if they need more liquid

Nothing. Weaning also won't make them sleep through the night.
At 5 months their digestive system isn't mature enough to handle food and so they might even sleep worse due to discomfort.

You start with a vegetable a it doesn't contain sugar and literally a few spoonfuls as it's to get used to flavour and texture

By 9 months you start replacing bottles with food
Now it just a taste

Sick of it

Is anyone else just sick of being the default parent?

I understand my partner works but the weekends he’s home. For context he has had 3 days off this weekend already not once has he got up with our baby (we have 2 children) 4 year age gap.

I do both bed times, wake up with both of them, make sure they’re fed and cleaned while he plays his games to “unwind” while I’m getting wound up.

His mum comes up and acts like I’m the one who should be doing everything and acts offended if I ask her son to do anything. And tonight!!!!! He was awake while our child was waking up crying. He didn’t help he actually waited for my sleep to be disturbed and then just said oh are they ok? Like he wasn’t awake the whole time!!!!!!!! I’m sick of it personally

Venting

Ok i feel really bad but i have no one to vent to. Lately ive been finding myself frustrated with my husband. I feel like he’s not as helpful as he used to be. He works over night so he can stay home with the baby while I’m at work but all he does is sleep and wakes up to feed her when she wakes up and than goes back to sleep. Luckily she sleeps a lot during the day so he is rested. Where as me, i go to work, do laundry, cook, clean, do my homework, fold laundry, put it away, pack his lunch etc. Today i left some used bottles on the sink to wash when i had time, i swore my husband told me he took care of the bottles. I just walked passed the sink and they are just sitting in hot water and soap 😡. Also he has not been so supportive during my panic attacks and anxiety and tells me o just need to put it behind me. I feel like we are disconnected but he says he doesn’t feel that way. I feel so alone. Sorry for the long vent! Thanks for reading.

Pre school Mean girls

Has anyone ever experienced little kids non-school age at playgroups that are little “mean girls”? Was at a play group this week and a group of three girls no older than 3/4 were going round purposely upsetting other kids, my lg (2.5) was playing in the big Wendyhouse and they went storming into it and started pulling at her and shouting at her that she had to leave because it was only theirs and she wasn’t allowed in so naturally I went and sat inside it next to her, asked them if they were being kind and doing good sharing and made sure that my lg knew that she didn’t have to move because she was getting lip wobbly. when they got bored they moved onto a little girl that was riding a little car and they kept kicking the doors as she was moving it and she was going “Please stop” and they just kept doing it more so I just went and stood in front of them and said “we don’t kick cars girls” but their parents were just sat chatting not getting involved and I didn’t go over. There had been a couple kids before that they’d decided to pick on too

What do you do in those situations? I don’t want to parent other peoples kids and overstep a boundary… Is it a developmental thing that toddlers suddenly group up and become mean? because I’d be so upset if my lo was doing that to other children
Obviously don’t want to wrap my daughter up in cotton wool either as I know school can have some hard moments and I won’t always be there to protect her. But what is the right thing to do?

Schools for incredibly intelligent kid

Hi! My almost 3 year old is a genius. I am not biased lol, her teachers tell me she is incredibly smart and fear they are not going to be able to help her progress as she should. Now my husband is a genius so I’m not surprised with how smart she is, but I am an average person lol and I’m wondering if there are other moms in this situation.
Firstly I’m looking for preschools in Marin/Sonoma county that are more equipped for smarter children. Her current teachers have her doing kindergarten curriculum.

Also any moms that have experience raising incredibly intelligent kids, and any advice on how you kept up with them?

Dealing with entitlement towards your baby

How do you deal with people feeling entitled towards your baby, particularly family members? I’m really struggling with my in-laws behaviour around this and it’s creating so much tension in my relationship with my partner.

For context, when I was pregnant we lived 5 minutes from them and 20 minutes from my family. My MIL would appear at our door at times unannounced, even when I was WFH). We’ve now moved exactly and are now the same distance from both our families.
When we told them I was very early pregnant, they quickly went out and bought things like bottle/sterilising kits without knowing if we had a preference for anything (although it was appreciated, it then meant we couldn’t go for something we preferred). Same with clothes, they bought a large amount in styles that are similar in style to their other granddaughter but nothing like any style that makes sense for us. They’ve also made comments about how much they need to buy for Christmas without asking us if there’s anything we do/don’t want/need, and making comments about how we don’t need to buy a lot but they’re “grandparents so we can buy whatever we like”.

I had a fall during pregnancy and had to wait around 36 hours to find out if baby was okay. We were both then messaged 5-6 times for a scan picture which we both felt was inappropriate. When my partner emphasised it was a scan for baby’s wellbeing and reminded his mum of boundaries, she lost her temper and said things like boundaries don’t matter because of her being his mum.

Since having my baby I’ve become really anxious around trusting them with the boundaries we feel comfortable with. We have watched them override boundaries with their other grandchild.

For example, one of our boundaries is that we have a no kissing rule (for everyone minus myself and my partner). My FIL suffers from cold sores and kisses his other grandchild on the lips which I worry has created an expectation for our daughter (which I will be very strict on NOT happening!). We also get messages demanding to have pictures of the baby sent most days (which also then get put into AI platforms 😖). They’ve also been pushy about having baby themselves which I do not feel comfortable with at this point in time.

It all came to a head a few weeks ago when my partner said we would see his parents a few hours later. We were then told no that doesn’t suit us and they were coming now. My partner reminded them that we have the baby and it needs to work for her/us. He then got a barrage of messages about how they only see her once a week (this is at a minimum and they’ve often seen her more than this), about how my parents will see her more and how now we have moved, they knew they wouldn’t see us, and how they’re grandparents so they should be able to turn up to ours whenever they like.

I feel it’s now planted a seed in my partners head about the grandparents needing to have equal time, despite my parents never putting pressure on us to see them or ever feeling like our boundaries are disrespected. This has also now created situations where my partner will find problems with my parents, despite having a great relationship with them. My MIL does not acknowledge or apologise for her behaviour which I feel makes me distance myself from her as I struggle with how she behaves.

I also have had situations where I’ve been holding my baby and my FIL has come and taken her out my hands without asking to “give mum a break”, as well as asked me to hand her back over to my MIL (after she’d already had her for a period of time) so that “she’d be happy with how much time she’d got with her”.

Am I ridiculous for feeling like they are just ruining my postpartum experience and potentially ruining my relationship? With my own family I know I can say something and it is listened to, whereas my partner doesn’t have that dynamic with his parents. I want to have a good relationship with them but I feel like we are expected to do things in a way that will keep them happy rather than having the opportunity to learn how to be parents ourselves.
