Starting solids is cute in theory. Tiny spoons. Messy faces. Sweet potato everywhere.

In reality? You need the best high chair you can get your hands on. One that’s safe, easy to clean, doesn’t destroy your vibe, and ideally doesn’t take up your entire kitchen. 🙃

We asked real moms on Peanut what they actually use and love. Not what looks good in a catalog. Not what an influencer was gifted. Real homes. Real crumbs. Real opinions.

Here are the best high chairs, broken down by lifestyle, budget, and space.

📝 In this article:

What to look for in the best high chair for you and your babe

Choosing the best high chair for your family

When to buy your baby’s first high chair

You don’t need a high chair on day one. But you also don’t want to be panic-ordering one while your baby is smearing mashed avocado across your lap.

Most parents buy their baby’s first high chair sometime around 3 months — just before they can start showing signs of being ready to actually use a high chair. But others also buy one before baby’s born. Whichever works for you, mama!

If you’re building a registry, adding a high chair makes sense. It’s one of the few feeding items that gets daily use for months (or years). If space is tight, you might wait until baby shows readiness signs before committing.

And here’s the real talk: if your baby is already grabbing your fork, staring down your dinner, and trying to sit up every time you eat… it’s probably time.

Getting the right high chair before starting solids makes the transition smoother. Less stress. Better posture. More family mealtime vibes.

And honestly? Having baby at the table with you changes everything. Messy? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.

When to start using a high chair

Short answer? Not the second you bring baby home. 😅

Most babies are ready to start using a high chair around 6 months old, when they’re developmentally ready for solids. The key signs to look for:

  • Sitting upright with minimal support
  • Good head and neck control
  • Interest in food (grabbing your toast absolutely counts)
  • Loss of the tongue-thrust reflex

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends starting solids around 6 months, not before 4 months, and only when baby shows readiness signs — not just because the calendar says so. [1]

Even if your high chair reclines, that doesn’t mean it’s meant to replace safe sleep or floor time. The best high chair for baby is one that supports upright posture, with feet supported and hips stable. Slouchy, half-reclined feeding isn’t ideal once solids are in the picture.

And remember: every baby develops at their own pace. If your friend’s baby was sitting at 5 months and yours isn’t? That’s normal. Comparison is a thief. Of joy. And sanity.

Our Peanut moms’ top picks for the best high chairs

When it comes to the best high chairs, we’re not interested in glossy marketing claims. We want real kitchens. Real mess. Real moms who’ve actually scraped dried Weetabix off a tray at 6:47am.

So here are the high chairs Peanut moms recommend again and again — for different budgets, homes, and lifestyles:

Best wooden high chair: Stokke Tripp Trapp

1. Best wooden high chair: Stokke Tripp Trapp

This one has a fan club. And honestly? It earns it.

The Tripp Trapp is one of those rare baby items that doesn’t feel like it has an expiration date. It grows with your child from baby to toddler to actual school-aged human sitting at the table like a proper dinner guest.

One Peanut mom told us: “We have a Tripp Trapp and love it. It grows with your child — my niece uses hers as her dining seat at 7 so it’s definitely an investment. They are expensive but second hand you can get one at a decent price.”

That long-game value comes up again and again. Another mom shared: “We have a Tripp Trapp and love it! It grows with your child so you can have it for years and they are super robust. My son is pretty rambunctious, shall we say, and it contains him really well!”

(If you have a climber, a wriggler, or a tiny chaos gremlin, you’ll appreciate that last part.)

And then there’s the aesthetic factor — because yes, we’re allowed to care about that. One mom put it perfectly: “I love that it looks nice, and that (selfishly) is probably the best bit! Our neighbours actually gave us theirs… it's such a good bit of kit, it's in perfect condition even on its 3rd child. We're in the toddler stage and I think it really comes into its own to support with ‘I do it by myself’, as he climbs in and out.”

That’s the magic here. Solid wood. Adjustable seat and footrest. Slides right up to the table so your baby feels included instead of parked off to the side. It doesn’t scream “plastic baby gear explosion.”

Why moms love it:

  • Long-term investment (with strong resale value)
  • Adjustable seat and footrest for proper posture
  • Encourages independence
  • Minimalist, modern design
  • Seriously durable (third-child approved 👏)

If you’re into the Montessori approach, this is often considered a Montessori high chair favorite because it supports posture and lets kids sit properly at the family table.

Yes, it’s pricey. But this is very much a “buy once, use for years” situation. And if you go second-hand? Even better. Sustainable and smart.

Best affordable high chair: IKEA Antilop

2. Best affordable high chair: IKEA Antilop

It’s simple. It’s wipe-clean. It has zero mysterious crevices for mashed banana to fossilize in. And Peanut moms are very clear about how much they appreciate that.

One mom told us: “It’s all plastic, just take it outside and hose it off. Doesn't take up a lot of space and it’s less than $30!”

Honestly? The hose-it-down energy is unmatched.

Another shared: “So many mommas recommended it to me. Great price tag, too, and doesn’t take up much space. It also comes apart very easily for travel. We picked up 2 since they are under $30.”

Two! Because at that price, why not keep one at grandma’s house and one at home?

And the practicality doesn’t stop there: “The IKEA Antilop is super handy, cheap and easy to clean — you can even bring it into the garden and hose it down then antibac spray it to have it clean if it's really dirty. And as it's really simple there's nowhere for baby to trap their fingers. It's also used in a lot of restaurants/cafes etc so if you were out… they would be familiar with the high chair."

Is it fancy? No.

Does it work? Absolutely.

Why moms love it:

  • Budget-friendly (under-$30 icon status)
  • Super easy to clean (garden hose approved)
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Easy to take apart for travel
  • Surprisingly sturdy
  • Simple design with fewer finger-trapping spots

For small kitchens, tight budgets, or grandparents’ houses, this is often called the MVP. If you’re overwhelmed by options, this is the “just get this and move on with your life” choice.

The only downside Peanut moms mentioned? There’s no built-in footrest. Some parents add a DIY or aftermarket one for better posture support.

But if your top priority is affordable, compact, and genuinely easy to clean? The Antilop is very hard to beat.

Best high chair for baby (style meets function): Nuna ZAAZ

3. Best high chair for baby (style meets function): Nuna ZAAZ

If you want something sleek, adjustable, and not screaming “primary-colored plastic,” this one gets a lot of love from Peanut moms.

The Nuna ZAAZ is one of those chairs that actually looks like it belongs in your kitchen. Clean lines. Minimal bulk. No chaotic baby-gear energy.

One mom told us: “This high chair is pricier, but it will grow with our son as he grows, and eventually turn into his normal seat at the table. 😊 It also fits the look of our house and kitchen which was a bonus!"

That balance of function and aesthetic? Huge for a lot of us.

Another shared: “We have the Nuna Zaaz and we love it! It’s not cheap but it is attractive looking, very sturdy, completely wipeable and you can even pop the straps out to launder them. So far, no complaints!"

Completely wipeable is the kind of phrase that hits different once you’ve dealt with yogurt in upholstery.

And this came up more than once: “We have the Nuna ZAAZ, and I think it’s brilliant. Has no creases for food to hide in so easy to clean and the straps come off for the washing machine. You can adjust the height and it grows with your child as it turns into a chair once finished with the high chair part.”

No creases for food to hide in? Say less.

Why moms love it:

  • Height-adjustable (great counter height high chair option)
  • Modern, minimalist design
  • Completely wipeable surfaces
  • Straps remove for machine washing
  • Grows beyond baby stage into a regular chair
  • Very sturdy

Yes, it’s definitely an investment. But if you want something that blends beautifully into a modern home and works hard through the messy years, the Nuna ZAAZ makes a strong case for itself.

Best hook on high chair and best travel high chair: Inglesina Fast Table Chair

4. Best hook on high chair and best travel high chair: Inglesina Fast Table Chair

If you eat out a lot, travel, visit family, or simply don’t trust restaurant high chairs (honestly… fair), this one comes up again and again on Peanut.

The Inglesina Fast Table Chair clips straight onto the table. No legs. No bulky frame. No dragging a full-sized seat through a restaurant doorway while everyone watches you struggle. It folds into its own bag and you’re done.

One mom summed up the obsession perfectly: “I’m obsessed with the Inglesina Table Chair. We have 2 under 2 and it clips on to virtually any table or counter. You throw it in the wash when it gets gross, but I only do that once a month, otherwise I wipe it with a wet cloth.”

Two under two and still obsessed? That’s a strong endorsement.

Another Peanut mom said: “Inglesina Fast Table Chair, you can attach it directly to the table when needed and take it off once you are done. I have the ‘classic’ high chair but I’m switching to this one!”

And this came up too: “We got this one and like that he’s sitting right at the table with us, plus it’s easy to pack and take to family’s houses if need be!”

That “right at the table with us” feeling matters. It keeps baby included and saves space at the same time.

Why it’s a winner:

  • Lightweight and compact
  • Clips onto most tables and counters
  • Machine-washable fabric
  • Easy to wipe down between washes
  • Packs small for travel
  • Great for small spaces

If you want one of the best portable high chairs without dragging a full seat around — and without sacrificing stability — this one really delivers. Especially if your lifestyle includes restaurants, road trips, or grandparents who don’t want permanent baby furniture in their dining room.

Best portable high chair for toddlers: Chicco Pocket Snack Booster Seat

5. Best portable high chair for toddlers: Chicco Pocket Snack Booster Seat

If your baby is sitting confidently and you don’t need full newborn support anymore, this is where the Chicco Pocket Snack really shines.

It straps onto a regular dining chair. It can sit on the floor for picnics. It folds flat. It travels easily. It’s basically the “we’re out of the baby-baby phase but still need support” MVP.

One Peanut mom told us: “We got the Chico Pocket Snack booster. It straps to regular sized chair or can go on floor. I’ve travelled with and use it every day since he was 6 months — he’s now 16 months. It’s easy to clean. No cushions but that’s ok. And space saving.”

That daily-use longevity? Love to see it.

Another mom jumped in with serious enthusiasm: “We’re going back almost 5 years now but I had to reply as it was the best thing I ever brought. It’s called Chicco Pocket Snack portable high chair. It was brilliant, can take it to restaurants, away on holiday, use it on a dining chair and also use it on the floor for picnics etc. I loved it!”

And this one hits the heartstrings a little: “The Chicco gets my vote hands down. My boy has sat at the table with us from pretty much day 1 and joined in our family meals. He’s really well behaved at the table now and I’m sure that’s why. It straps to a chair and is portable so you can take it out with you too which is handy!”

Sitting at the table together? That’s the dream.

Why moms love it:

  • Adjustable height
  • Super foldable and compact
  • Affordable
  • Easy to clean
  • Straps securely to regular chairs
  • Can be used on the floor for picnics

For travel, small homes, or just not wanting another giant piece of furniture, this is a solid pick. Especially once your little one is firmly in toddler territory and determined to eat “just like us.”

Best high chair for small spaces: Baby Jogger City Bistro

6. Best high chair for small spaces: Baby Jogger City Bistro

Tiny apartment? Open-plan chaos? Zero storage? We see you. 👀

The Baby Jogger City Bistro comes up a lot with Peanut moms who don’t have the luxury of spare corners for bulky baby gear. This one folds nearly flat. Like… actually flat.

One mom shared: “I have the Baby Jogger City Bistro high chair, little pricey but I love it! Has a 5PT harness to help my 4 month old sit with us at the table. She has good head control but still needs help not slouching over. Also folds so small it’s perfect for small spaces. Easy to clean also. Only con is the suction toys don’t stick well to it.”

That 5-point harness is a big deal if you’re starting solids early and still need extra support.

Another mom told us: “We have a small space and minimal storage, so we are going with the Baby Jogger City Bistro. It has good reviews and it folds up super compact when not in use.”

And this one sums up apartment life perfectly: “We live in an apartment and just bought the Baby Jogger City Bistro. Folds up super small and have heard it’s really easy to clean.”

If your kitchen doubles as your office and your living room (hello, millennial life), that compact fold really matters.

Why moms love it:

  • Slim and super compact when folded
  • One-hand fold
  • 5-point harness for added support
  • Easy-to-clean surfaces
  • Sturdy frame

It’s a practical choice for smaller homes, especially if you need to tuck everything away at the end of the day and pretend you don’t live inside a baby catalog.

Best easy-to-clean high chair: Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair

7. Best easy-to-clean high chair: Abiie Beyond Wooden High Chair

Let’s be honest. For a lot of us, “easy to clean” is not a bonus feature — it’s the whole brief.

If you love the wooden high chair look but don’t want to baby it like a piece of designer furniture, the Abiie Beyond keeps popping up in Peanut conversations.

One mom put it simply: “Abiie Beyond! Wood, easy to clean, and good foot support (surprisingly important if you research it) but cheaper than Stokke Tripp Trap. (It also will work throughout babyhood and can even be adapted for adults up to 250lbs).”

That foot support point? It actually matters more than people think. Proper posture can help with safe eating and comfort — so it’s not just aesthetic.

Another mom shared: “I have the Abiie Beyond and it’s not foldable, but it’s very petite. It fits well in my small house and it came highly recommended by a feeding specialist.”

Petite but sturdy is a great combo, especially if you’re short on space but don’t want something flimsy.

And this flexibility is a big plus: “I’d recommend the Abiie Beyond high chair! It adjusts as the kiddo grows and you can eventually pull it up to the table to use for a bigger kid in lieu of a booster seat.”

That long-term usability really sets it apart. You’re not replacing it the second your baby hits toddler mode.

Why moms love it:

  • Waterproof cushions that wipe clean
  • Adjustable seat and footrest
  • Strong foot support for better posture
  • Converts into a toddler chair (and beyond)
  • Compact footprint for smaller homes
  • More affordable than some premium wooden options

It’s a great middle ground between budget plastic and luxury Scandinavian. Wooden, practical, durable — and built for real-life mess, not showroom vibes.

Best convertible high chair: Graco Blossom 6-in-1

8. Best convertible high chair: Graco Blossom 6-in-1

At some point, your baby turns into a fiercely independent snack goblin who insists, “I DO IT.” And suddenly you need a seat that can keep up.

The Graco Blossom 6-in-1 isn’t just a high chair — it’s basically a transformer for your dining room. Infant seat. High chair. Booster. Youth chair. In some setups, it can even seat multiple kids at once.

One Peanut mom broke it down in detail: “Graco Blossom! It is super easy to clean and has six height adjustments. It also can be pulled apart into 3 pieces and seat 3 kids at once. It comes with a toddler booster, infant seat plus a youth chair… Started using mine at 6 months but you can start earlier if you want for bottle feeding because the seat also reclines.”

Three kids at once? That’s not a high chair. That’s a system.

Another mom shared: “I have had the Graco Blossom 6 in 1 high chair for 3 years now and I highly recommend it. I love how versatile my chair is and how I can get two separate chairs from it at one time (the youth chair and the high chair). And we have used it to travel several times and it has worked well for us.”

Travel-friendly and multi-stage? That’s long-term value.

This came up too: “Graco Blossom 6 in 1! Reasonably priced, and goes from infant chair all the way up to youth chair with all the stages in between.”

And for families planning siblings close together, this comment is key: “My Graco Blossom is awesome. It comes with a separate booster seat so it’s good for potentially 2 kids at once! My almost 2 year old does great in the main chair or the booster (booster is great to take with us on trips)… The tray comes off completely and also has a top piece that comes off that makes it easy to just wash a single plastic piece.”

That removable tray top? Small feature. Huge sanity saver.

Why moms love it:

  • Long-term value (infant to youth chair)
  • Six height adjustments
  • Multiple seating stages
  • Can seat two (or even three) kids in certain configurations
  • Reclining infant seat option
  • Removable, easy-to-clean tray
  • Padded comfort

If you’re planning multiple kids close together — or just want one piece of baby gear that adapts instead of being replaced every year — this one makes a lot of practical sense. It’s not minimalist. It’s not tiny. But it works. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

What to look for in the best high chair for you and your babe

The truth is that the best high chair isn’t just the one with the most five-star reviews. It’s the one that fits your kitchen, your storage situation, your budget, and your baby’s personality (yes, that matters too). The chair your best friend swears by might drive you absolutely wild — and that’s okay. This is about finding the right fit for your daily chaos, not winning some imaginary parenting award.

Before you click “add to cart,” here’s what actually matters:

✔️ Easy cleaning: Look for a removable tray, dishwasher-safe parts, and minimal seams and crevice. Dried oatmeal is forever. Choose wisely.

✔️ Adjustable footrest: This is huge for posture and safe eating. A good adjustable high chair supports your baby’s feet so they’re not dangling.

✔️ Stability: Wide base. No wobble. Five-point harness for younger babies.

✔️ Size: If space is tight, a foldable high chair or best compact high chair option will save your sanity.

✔️ Longevity: Some of the best convertible high chair can last years instead of months.

Counter height high chair vs standard height

If you have a kitchen island and eat there most of the time, a counter height high chair might make sense. Just double-check compatibility before buying — not all “adjustable” chairs actually reach counter height safely.

Otherwise, most standard high chairs are designed for regular dining tables and will slide right up without any awkward height gaps. If you’re not sure, measure your table and compare it to the seat height range before committing.

Montessori high chair: Does it matter?

Short answer? It can. A Montessori-style high chair (like the Tripp Trapp) supports:

  • Proper posture
  • Feet flat on a surface
  • Baby sitting at the table

It encourages independence and inclusion during meals, which can help babies feel part of the family setup instead of parked off to the side. That said, Montessori is a philosophy — not a requirement. A safe, supportive seat that works in your real-life kitchen is always the priority.

What’s the best high chair for baby starting solids?

The best high chair for baby is one with a solid footrest, upright seating, an easy-to-clean tray, and good harness support. You want baby stable and supported, not slouching or dangling their legs mid-purée.

Many moms love the Stokke Tripp Trapp or IKEA Antilop for different reasons (budget vs longevity). It really comes down to how long you want to use it and how much cleaning effort you’re willing to tolerate.

What is the best portable high chair?

For travel? The Inglesina Fast Table Chair wins for most moms. It clips onto tables and folds small.

It’s especially handy if you eat out often or visit family regularly and don’t want a full-size chair living in your trunk. Lightweight, compact, and easy to wipe down — that’s the portable sweet spot.

What’s the best high chair for small spaces?

Look at foldable or compact designs like the Baby Jogger City Bistro.

If storage is tight, prioritize chairs that fold flat and can tuck behind a door or into a closet. In small homes, the ability to reclaim your floor space after dinner is genuinely life-changing.

Choosing the best high chair for your family

The truth? The best high chair isn’t about aesthetics or hype. It’s about what works for your kitchen, your baby, and your tolerance for cleaning mashed avocado off upholstery. 🥑

Some moms want beautiful wood that lasts years. Some want wipe-clean plastic and zero stress. Both are valid.

If you’re still torn, join us on Peanut and ask other moms what they’re using right now. Real reviews. Real crumbs. Real talk.

You don’t have to figure this out alone. ❤️

Peace of mind please

I shot up at 4am last night and had the urge to check my little boy who sleeps in a cot next to our bed.
For the first time he has rolled over and was sleeping on his stomach, my heart dropped.
I was so scared that I picked him up to make sure he was okay and he was just sound asleep…

What are we supposed to do if they roll over in their sleep?! He’s almost 6 months old and I’m prettified of him rolling and it being a different outcome if I don’t wake up..

Just need some peace of mind that this is
okay?

6m old not sleeping

My 6m old won’t sleep. He goes bed at 8/8.30. He’ll sleep until 3am and then he just wakes up like he’s ready for the day.
He’s not hungry, cold, too hot, not teething ect but it’s been going on for about a week. He then won’t go back to sleep until 5ish then he wakes every single morning at 7 on the dot. I’m exhausted. Anyone got any tips on helping this because he’s then so mardy throughout the day due to lack of sleep.

Moving 18 week old to her own room

Just looking for some advice really. I know at this age (18 weeks) she will most likely be going through sleep regression BUT I have been thinking for a while now about the time to put her in her own cot.. she’s in a next to me one at the moment and is constantly hitting the sides with her feet and she’s waking up so so much! Has any other mums moved their babies to their own room?

We have the owlet sock and camera so of course would keep an eye on her and I’m planning on sleeping in the room with her to begin with just to see if she sleeps any better. I know it’s advised 6 months due to SIDS but feel as though we would all get better sleep

I don’t really know what to do as me and my partner are EXHAUSTED

P.s she does nap through the day really well in her own bed so she is used to it

How are you BOTH getting sleep with a newborn?! 😴

Hey mamas 🤍

Looking for any advice or tips on how to protect a few hours of sleep for both me and my partner 🙏

We have a 5-week-old who usually wakes around 12/1/2am (depending on bedtime), and then again around 3/4/5am. My partner works from 7am to 5pm usually, so evenings can feel a bit full-on, and nights are quite broken at the moment (which I understand is quite normal!).

We’re combi feeding, as in the baby has expressed breast milk during the day, and we switch to formula overnight.

Would love to hear what’s worked for you from shifts, routines, anything that helped you both get a bit more rest 💭✨

Anyone else have a colic baby? If so how do you cope with it and get your sleep in? I’ve tried everything under the sun, on top of this he’s cluster feeding like hell.
