Struggling deeply with stress around MIL

I really need help figuring out what to do as I’m losing sleep on a regular basis and don’t need this pressure at almost 7 months pregnant. I’ll start with the important fact that I am a Christian and it’s of utmost importance to me to keep our family intact, to foster peace and healing in our dynamic, and to not triangulate between my husband and his mom. However, I truly believe that my MIL struggles with narcissism. I know there’s only so much that I can do to mitigate drama with an unreasonable person but could use the support of outside perspectives.

I’m trying to determine boundaries for when the baby arrives. This is my first child and my husband and I have really wanted to go with the whole “we will let you know when we’re ready for visitors” route. But his mom has continually pushed back on this and wants to come in town 2-3 weeks after my due date because it happens to line up with their holiday vacation time. I’ve considered just letting them travel in town to not cause waves, but the more I think about it the more I fear that her selfishness might become an issue in my postpartum healing. I also don’t want this experience ruined by drama and need to protect this precious attachment phase with my baby.

I worry that she is going to come in town and continue crossing boundaries (I.e. staying too long, wanting to hog the baby, wanting to bottle feed when we are only breastfeeding, not giving the baby back to me when it’s upset, not coming by to help but only interested in seeing the new shiny toy etc). I could be completely wrong on this but my protective instincts are on high alert after she told me I “need to share” the baby with her because I told her we are not making plans for the holidays since my due date falls between Thanksgiving and Christmas…as if the baby is going anywhere if she doesn’t see him immediately when he gets here. And God forbid we have any complications arise, major traumas, or development of postpartum mood issues that would require more time for recovery…it just seems too quick to allow someone I don’t have trust with to come racing into town to entertain when all I want to do is focus on my own family and adapt to becoming a new mom.

What do you think is a reasonable timeframe to allow family/visitors to visit after birth? Keeping in mind that this would be an extended visit because they would be driving here cross country (2 day drive) and they never stay any less than 3-4 days with that kind of travel time commitment. They would stay in a hotel but comments have been made that indicate she would be hanging out here all day to hold the baby and what not… help. 😓

If they do come just make sure all the boundaries above be mentioned by your partner because it’s his side of the family and he needs to help talk to them and not make you out to be the bad guy when doing it if possible. I honestly kind of understand them wanting to visit their first grandchild because that’s a major event in a grandparents life too, the family just wants to show love and excitement but there isn’t any reason they shouldn’t be able to do this respectfully after giving birth

I’d say you don’t want to commit to anything because you don’t know how you feel. Tell them you do know though that visitors will be welcome for a few hours only as you need the first month to get into your breastfeeding routine. As a first time mum you may not be aware that sometimes your baby can be on your nipple for hours at a time to cluster feed. This is necessary to get your supply up. You also need to be relaxed as stress will stop your milk coming in. The last thing you want is someone in your house all day and not respecting you. People get a short few minutes good with your baby in the first month if you feel comfortable and apart from that it’s all you. Not even Dad will get them so much as they need to be skin on skin with you and the feeding. You could use your midwife as an excuse if you have to and say this is what you have been instructed you need to do. If she goes on then tell her you are sorry she feels that way but you are only doing what is best for you and baby

I think at 2-3 weeks postpartum you will feel ready for a visit & it will be nice for MIL to see the baby while they’re still little, they change so much in those first weeks. I think you just need to set the other boundaries first aka - ensure she knows you will be trying to breastfeed & that you want your baby back when they are upset to comfort them. She probably will be interested in meeting her grandchild & want to soak up the cuddles, especially since she lives so far away.

But I think as long as she is aware of your boundaries it won’t affect your healing & postpartum period. & since she lives a two-day drive away, it isn’t something that can be done spontaneously, that is a trip that does need to be planned because it’s such a long journey and around busy Christmas time. If she’s in a hotel she doesn’t need to be at your home for long periods of time.

My MIL tried to insist on coming to the hospital the day after my (evening!) birth and I had an emergency c speri

I would highly suggest wearing your baby in a sling. That will send out the message without being aggressive. If she still tries to paw at baby you can tell her to fuck off out of your personal space ... Do they know the due date? If not lie about it!! Xx

We told everyone that the first month it will only be our family of 3 (both sets live in different countries than us).
My mil came at 28 days instead of the full month (for just a couple of days though) and I am still annoyed at this almost 2 years later. I accepted it because I understood that weekend was the only time she could have travelled.
You should focus on your baby, your new family, on your recovery and on understanding who you and your partner are as parents.
If mil still comes, make sure you communicate that she should take each day at a time and not create any set expectations.
You could also make a list of things you want to ask your mil to support with, perhaps balance a few house chores and baby things so she feels included in everything. However, it is not your job to manage her feelings, her time or anything during this period. I would say it is her son’s job but he should also just focus on you, the baby and your family of 3.

I would take the first month if you can. That time is precious and you’ll want that with your little family. We never got this (even though it’s what we wanted due to baby being 2 weeks late) and it’s the biggest thing I wish we did differently. That time to heal and just be with baby is so valuable without the stress of visitors. They can “help” all they want, but it’s not the same as having a quiet space in my opinion!

Personally, I would suggest blaming it on COVID. I’m not afraid of Covid at all lol But with it being sick season anyway, the last thing I would want is for someone to travel in and get my entire family sick 3w after giving birth. We had a boundary of traveling visitors coming 6w or after so that Baby’s immune system could develop a bit. When people travel, they stop for food, gas, etc and see a ton of random people going through a ton of different places. Almost every time I hear of someone catching Covid (for example) it’s after traveling. So I would just use that, and if she doesn’t like it then you can stand on it being what’s best for Baby. Visitors aren’t bad at 3w in my opinion, I’m usually ready right about then to have people over, but with it being an extended stay that’s a whole other ballgame to me. As someone mentioned above though, baby wearing does help a lot in keeping people from feeling they have free access.

We agreed on 2 weeks which was fine but we didn’t have visitors we went to visit my MIL and left after 1 hour. I would definitely set boundaries and also limit visitation. You’ll be tired and healing and getting used to being a new mom. I’m a new mom 7 weeks pp and have had people over 2 times and it was stressful af. I would tell her she can come for an hour a day unless she wants to do chores lol

I was saying that anytime they come in town it’s for a minimum 3-4 days given how far they have to travel, but this time they are talking about staying the entire week after Christmas.

Is this clever or cruel?

My husband and i were talking and with social media and the internet in general being a terrifying dumpster fire, we are trying to figure out the best way to keep our son safe while still teaching him how to safely be online and moderation.

We landed on the idea of giving him the 90's kid treatment. A computer in the living room for us to keep an eye on what hes doing online, and once we feel hes mature enough to hang with friends without adult supervision he gets a flip phone. When we feel he is responsible enough and he earns and saves up the money for the physical phone, case, and screen cover, then we will be happy to take him to get a smart phone.

I thought this was air tight, but now my brother says its cruel to give a kid a flip phone, and besides he can just use his friends phones at school.

My husband and i remember a time before the internet, and we remember having complete access to something no one understood yet. We saw unspeakable things and are always battling with the urge to put the phone and social media down. I dont want that for my son, especially with his brain so vulnerable still.

Partner no longer wants baby #2

Before our son was born we originally both wanted minimum 2 kids but we were hoping for 3-4. My partner found the birth traumatic to watch and also struggled a lot with the newborn/baby stage. He no longer wants to have any more children and it’s completely breaking my heart. I need another baby. We’ve spoken about it a lot and the options. He said he wasn’t COMPLETELY closed off to it so I asked him to try and work through his feelings and reconsider his decision. He eventually said he definitely doesn’t want another. I know that I will always want one and my feelings will never change. Do we have to break up or does anyone know anything else I can do to help change his mind? Has anyone else’s partner said this and then changed their mind? I don’t want to break up because I adore him and our life together and I’d hate to split up our family for “selfish” reasons and make my son miss out on having both of us together but I just don’t know what to do

Nursery funding

My child turned 9 months last week. I applied for government funded hours nearly 2 months ago and so well within the required timeframe for the April term, however upon receiving my first invoice without the funding applied and having questioned this, I have now been informed that the stretched funding doesn’t start until 4th May.

Has anyone else been told it won’t start until May?

The government site states it should start from April 1st, and so I intentionally set my nursery start and return to work as the start of April for that reason, knowing that I wouldn’t be able to afford the nursery on my sole income without the funding

Jealous of my husband

I’m so jealous of him and it’s making me resentful. We have a ten week old and I’m jealous that he is at work all day. I’m jealous he can leave for lunch and actually eat an uninterrupted lunch. Take a phone call uninterrupted. Chat with a friend he runs in to uninterrupted. Even go to the bathroom when he wants uninterrupted. He comes home from work when he wants. He’s not on a set schedule. Some days are late some are early. It depends on when he’s done. I’m jealous he can come home at 10pm and shower, eat and go right to bed uninterrupted because I already have the baby asleep. He doesn’t have to worry about anything house wise or baby wise because I’ve done it all. Meanwhile I’m covered in puke and crap and smell like rotten milk. When he is home he is VERY active and helpful. So it’s not that. I’m just jealous his world hasn’t changed and mine has I guess. This isn’t something he’s doing wrong so I’m not sure how to get past this. I wish I could keep him home all day because that’s how helpful he is, but I understand he obv needs to work.

He has no respect for anything to do with me.

Husband and I decided to separate 3 days ago. I've been sleeping on the floor in the kids room, and we both have to stay in the same apartment for a while. He wont stop pushing little things and I am reaching my limit. Photos in comments
