My husband and I used to exist on Beyond products, but don’t want to feed these to baby because of the sodium levels and other additives. We’re trying to be conscientious of his protein intake, but we’re getting tired of black beans and chickpeas. How have y’all been handling being a vegetarian and making baby-safe food?

I’ve mashed raw tofu up for my daughter when she was on baby foods, her doctor even recommended it . I’ve also given her mashed avocado too which she loved.

Do you have Quorn where you live? I’ve just compared Quorn mince to beyond mince as an example, Quorn is only 0.11g vs beyond being 0.75g per 100g x

There’s really not a need to focus so much on protein. Just be eating enough calories, we are eating enough protein. It’s really only beneficial for weight loss as it helps with satiety.
I do mashed potatoes with cashew gravy, lentil loaf, black bean burgers, Mac n cheese with a cashew cheese sauce, oatmeal (oats have high protein), cheesy hashbrowns with the same cashew cheese, falafel, stir fry with soy curls, chicken Alfredo with a cashew Alfredo and soy curls for the chicken, soy milk is also high in protein so we do smoothies with that every morning. For desert, chocolate pudding made with nuts and silken tofu. My 14 month old has been eating all of these for at least a couple months. She loves the soy curls if I season them.

My kid looooves edamame which is an easy source of protein. He’s now a toddler so it’s also fun for him to just eat but if your baby is smaller you can start by mashing it. Try to incorporate soy milk into meals as well and nuts or nut butters if you can, especially pistachios. Grounded pumpkin seeds in date balls :)

My 3-year-old also absolutely loves edamame as a snack. Also to second the tofu train, there are so many ways to use tofu. Tofu scramble is always a hit with my kiddo (and there are a million ways to make it, it’s easy to make ahead and have leftovers, and it’s in general easy to make). I would also sprinkle nutritional yeast on various dishes, or mix flax seed into/onto various things (vegan yogurt, peanut butter, etc.).

Our son loves lentils, which can be used in Bolognese sauce for example! Brown& green would work best for that.

We eat a lot of beans, tofu and seitan

Your baby doesn't need that much protein. Actually none of us do. He needs iron, fat, carbs.
I have an instagram you can pull ideas from if you like. @mommyandkoko
But also lentils are so versatile. Lentil loaf, lentil soup, Dahl, "meat" balls.
Also putting beans in different forms. Enchiladas, black bean burgers, chilli.
I like to use lentils or split peas in my soup bases to make it thick and pack in a little protein.

Lentils, hemp seeds, tofu, all the other kinds of beans, green peas, justegg...nuts.

My 4 year old absolutely loves tempeh as do I! Also try "walnut&mushroom" 'meat' absolutely amazing for bolognese, cottage pie etc and so easy to make!!
