There are a few places you can buy baby shoes, according to our Peanut moms:
Now you’ve got your baby shoes, how do you put them on?
First, loosen the shoe ‒ if it has any velcro or lace, make sure they’re spread wide enough to be able to fit baby’s foot in without hurting them.
If they’re not sandals, putting baby socks on first can help to get them on.
Then, slide baby’s foot firmly but gently into the shoe.
If it’s too tight to get baby’s foot in without forcing it, you may have to get a bigger shoe size, or a wider baby shoe size.
Make sure you have the right size of baby shoe for your 1-year-old ‒ hold the shoe sole up to baby’s foot to see if it will fit lengthways and for width.
Some babies have wider feet, so need wider fitting baby shoes.
Then, hold their foot in one hand and the baby shoe in the other, and slide the shoe on ‒ putting baby socks on first can help make it easier.
And voilà! Your 1-year-old’s decked out with fresh new kicks!
No, not always.
If baby’s not yet walking, they won’t need baby shoes.
But if they are walking, getting some walking baby shoes can be a good idea, so they’re ready to go if they’re walking in the great outdoors.
There are some arguments for and against wearing baby shoes while learning to walk.
However, the majority of podiatry experts advise against wearing baby shoes when learning to walk, as they can be distracting or inflexible for baby’s foot movements.
So it’s best to hold off on putting baby shoes on until they’re walking more confidently.
Generally speaking, no, Crocs aren’t a good idea for babies who are learning to walk.
While they are comfortable, they don’t offer enough support around the heel, which can mean that your baby is gripping the shoe with their toes, which can affect their walking later on.
Babies should wear soft-soled baby shoes until they are confidently walking ‒ around 15-18 months old.
This is to encourage them to walk more naturally when they’re taking their first, formative steps.
Baby shoe sizes can be confusing ‒ each region has their own way of sizing, but if you’re not sure, here’s a handy baby shoe size chart:
When measuring baby’s foot for their baby shoes, the trick is to measure from the heel to the tip of baby’s big toe for their insole measurement.
It can also help to measure the width of baby’s foot, at the widest part, to make sure you get the best fit for your little one.
A 3-month-old baby should wear approximately 1‒2 Infant for US baby shoes, 0‒1 for UK baby shoes, and 16‒17 for EU baby shoes.
A 10-month-old baby should wear approximately 5 Infant for US baby shoes, 4 for UK baby shoes, and 20 for EU baby shoes.
Some baby shoes size their shoes in age, so look out for 12-month baby shoes for the right fit.
However, others use baby shoe sizes. If this is the case, you’ll want around size 5 to 5.5 Infant for US baby shoes, 4‒4.5 for UK baby shoes, and 20‒21 for EU baby shoes.
When should I start putting shoes on my baby?
It’s recommended not to put baby shoes on baby until they are able to confidently walk, unless they are learning to walk outside.
So around 12‒18 months old is an ideal time to start putting baby shoes on your little explorer.
Baby shoes are mainly designed to protect baby’s feet from anything that might hurt them, so if baby can walk somewhere safe without damaging their feet, you won’t need to put baby shoes on.
Yes, you can, although they won’t be getting much use!
Most baby shoes for newborns tend to be soft, bootie-type shoes, so they don’t restrict baby’s foot growth or movement.
Not often, no. While baby may be standing by 7 months old, walking might be a little further away.
And even if baby is walking at 7 months old, which is quite uncommon, they should only be wearing baby shoes if they’re walking somewhere you would wear shoes ‒ outside.
There’s no denying it: baby shoes are cute! It’s taking all our willpower not to ‘Add to Cart’ for every single pair of these adorable babies’ shoes on our list!
